Issue CDLXVIII: The Acquisition Edition
The Tao of Color Grading Newsletter
Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sundays.
The big news in the Tao Newsletter family? Our sponsor OWC has acquired our former sponsor Lumaforge! Having dealt directly with both companies and having gotten to know them, I think Lumaforge is a good fit for OWC.

Down below, I've linked to the standard write-up on this acquisition. But just before press time, I found a blog post on RocketYard, OWC's blog. It's a really good inside perspective on how both of these companies began and where they're going from here. If you have the time, it's a fine read:

Jellyfish Finds A New Home

Another sponsor, Mixing Light, is in the middle of its '24 Insights in 24 Days Marathon'. I'm not going to overwhelm the Newsletter trying to keep up. I'll share 4-5 of these a week until we catch up.

Also, Mixing Light is still offering a terrific 'Work From Home' sale that saves big money on memberships to its Library (approaching 1,000 items).

I'll see you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!
(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to 'newsletter@taoofcolor.com'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
Colorist Asa Shoul: "We started with a cooler look overall in Season 1 and have become subtly more saturated and wider in color palette to reflect the diversity of the different characters’ stories and ages." Click through to learn what changed when HDR became the primary deliverable.
Colorist Cullen Kelly: "We’ll examine five tangible principles that will help you develop your own creative style as a colorist." The first item may have you click away since it's not necessarily achievable for many people but keep reading - the other 4 points are definitely worth your time.

Juan Ignacio Cabrera shares his mindmap on all the various decisions that factor into starting your own shop. Download the PDF for full-resolution viewing.

Netflix is leveraging this extended moment to break a 100-year-old cinema-going habit. But can they keep this up? "On top of that . . . Netflix is expected to spend $19 billion dollars on content in 2021 alone." That's a lot of content.

Interesting that Sony's limiting this new service to their own TVs: "Sony has today announced its own video streaming service that will launch on the company's XR range of 2021 TVs. It serves 4K and IMAX Enhanced movies at 'up to 80 Mbps'." Yet another deliverable?

This is nifty: "the method we’re going to outline here is a bit different. It allows you to install Windows on an external drive without first having Windows installed on a PC or in a virtual environment."

This is nuts: "Starting with Windows 10 1803 and continuing to this day is a simple and rather uncouth trick to corrupt a NTFS disk and prompt a reboot, which may not successfully launch.  It is a single line which can be delivered via a variety of methods including a ZIP archive, batch files, or even an shortcut and in the case of the shortcut you don’t need to launch it; it’s mere existence is enough to trash your drive."

When you look at OWC's portfolio, this acquisition makes sense. I congratulate both companies and wish them further success. What happens if you own a Jellyfish? "Jellyfish and LumaForge customers will continue receiving the support and development, while this trusted technology will flourish and have a whole new level of support and engagement within the OWC family."

If you're struggling with this choice, especially for an assist station there are interesting differences.

Professional editor Scott Simmons offers his perspective on this bit of kit: "When it comes to basic cutting with the Speed Editor there is no doubt you can zip around footage with an ease that isn’t really possible on a keyboard."

As regular readers know, professional displays flow downhill from consumer production lines. Is this good news for colorists holding out for a 32" OLED that doesn't cost a fortune? We shall see. (via Vivian Pimenta)

Interesting: "The high level of coverage of Rec 2020 is important, as is the use of three different light sources. These should combine to make the colour volume of the displays very impressive and make the sets look better than LCDs."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
Oh. This item easily escalates out of Gear Heads and into Fun: "With their attractive pricing and overall excellent performance, LG's HU810PW and sister AU810PB could usher in the laser revolution for a legion of videophiles hungering to leave aging lamps behind." For some of you, the pricing puts these in the 'fun money' range.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
