Issue CDLXIX: The Public Service Edition
The Tao of Color Grading Newsletter
Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sundays.
It's late on Saturday. So, we start with a quick commercial message and then straight to the Newsletter...

Mixing Light is still offering a terrific 'Work From Home' sale that saves big money on memberships to its Library (approaching 1,000 items). Now that they've just finished an Inishts Marathon, it's a great time to check them out.

Happy Grading!

I'll see you next Sunday.
(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to 'newsletter@taoofcolor.com'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
Jonny summarizes a terrific presentation Walter gave a few years ago that was recently released on Lowe Post and has generated a lot of talk. Jonny also neatly summarizes a series of questions that Walter answered on social media (scroll about halfway down to read the Q&A).

This item is a bit off-beat for this Newsletter. But, if you've got a side-hustle building and rendering 3D models then you should check this out.

At the Tao Newsletter, we have a protein folding team set up to use the idle time of our computer rigs to aid in the cause of advancing research against viruses and disease. A reader writes in: "Saw this and thought of your mission... Might be an interesting read for your "Color Cartel protein folding team" members." It is a good read about how distributed computing works - and how you can set one up yourself if you're so inclined. (via Joe Stern)

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your toolchest with new techniques and approaches.

As usual, I'm linking to the usually-detailed changelog - posted on BlackMagic's forum.

A detailed look: "In this “In-Depth”, I want to take a look at the new release of Sapphire 2021, and what has been added for subscribers and new users alike!"

Consider this a Public Service Announcement for post-production pros: "Since the issue is related to the latest Game Ready driver, the fix is to install the Studio driver instead." Got it? The fix with NVIDIA drivers almost always includes: Use the Studio driver. Pros don't let pros install the Game Ready drivers.
"The latest iteration includes support to display and use any non-standard frame rate timecodes, updated color space and gamma changes for RED .R3D files, and other fixes that plagued the program."
