Issue CDLXVII: The New Year Edition
The Tao of Color Grading Newsletter
Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sundays.
I take two Sundays off and already we're 10 days into 2021? Sheesh. It seems we can't run away from 2020 fast enough!

There's not much I want to say today. I should mention that the training company I co-founded, Mixing Light, is still offering a terrific 'Work From Home' sale that saves big money on memberships to our color grading website.

Also Mixing Light is in the midst of its 24 Insights In 24 Days New Year Marathon. If you're a member, check back there every day or so to see what's new.
I'll see you next Sunday (and every Sunday, until the next major holiday).

Happy Grading!

(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to 'newsletter@taoofcolor.com'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

A great effort: "Blue Collar Post Collective (BCPC), a grassroots non-profit organization supporting emerging talent in post, has raised and distributed $10,920 directly to US-based post production workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020." Details at the link.

Click through and then access the full results on Google Drive or several downloadable formats. Over 1,400 respondents... including many readers of the Tao Newsletter.

This is a good interview with Shane Hurlbut, ASC about the imaging pipeline for a new Disney+ original. They leveraged Resolve's flexible and easy proxy workflow to have camera original quality from dailies, through editorial, color, and final deliverables. It's a good read about a detailed workflow centered around the unique capabilities of DaVinci Resolve.
If your New Year resolution includes gaining a better understanding of DCPs then this new SMPTE Virtual Course may be for you: "Learn about the benefits and practical considerations of using DCPs in common mastering and distribution workflows — including your own."
A 10-week course to 'help you understand critical concepts and practical considerations across the HDR workflow'. This looks interesting for the more technically-inclined.

Just so you know: "HDR10+ Adaptive, a profile designed to optimize TV picture quality based on a room’s ambient brightness."

(video) Nice. "Using NDI and OBS as well as Nobe Display we can finally live stream the output of DaVinci Resolve without needing any hardware." This video shows you how to do it.
This should help mightily when moving between Avid and other apps, assuming Avid can now also read this metadata on import: "With this release, you can choose a custom Color Space when exporting as MOV, MP4, or OpenEXR. Editors can also set Color Scaling to Legal or Full Range when exporting as MOV or MP4."
(video) Colorist Darren Mostyn: "After a few days playing with the DaVinci Resolve 17 new Speed Editor I'm going to show you some top tips in under 10 minutes. Im also going to show you EXACTLY which functions in the Speed editor work in the Color Page too."
Mostly I'm including this short blog post because the embedded dog-in-space' GIF is kind'a awesome. But if you're new to understanding bit rates (and don't know or have forgotten what the 'x' stands for in DNxHD 185x) then this is a quick intro.
