The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
An accomplished DP/Director takes the helm as his own colorist. Learn how he used Look-Up Tables to achieve the final visual style of his film: "I really liked what these LUTs did on top of the corrections I made. And being that I am again, not a trained and certified colorist, I did something that was a bit of a cheat that helped quite a bit. For those who are not high-level colorists, here’s a good tip..." (videos) This time of year I get a lot of new subscribers from college students, assigned by their professors to read along for a semester. To those readers (and anyone new to the broadcast television business) here's a good roundup of videos about Showrunners.
"The list of 2020 theatrical releases continues to shrink - with tent poles pushing to 2021 - and Disney's 'Mulan' streaming experiment being deemed 'less than successful'." I've been reading more and more opinion pieces like this from WaPo about the Oscars. I have to say I'm thinking it's making more and more sense; no NAB, no IBC, no Oscars. The upshot of this personal story? There's hope for us fermented folks needing reading assistance.

That’s why Avid and Adobe are partnering to bring your postproduction teams a whole new world of efficiency." Thursday, 5 November 2020.
(video) "Learn how to use the HueAngle and the DKey and the differences between them."
"With [the September] release, we got Scene Edit Detection and some new beta stuff. This MAX release gives us more beta stuff and some early access. I guess technically this isn’t a new release of the shipping version then and more of a look at features down the road."

"Import support for ProRes RAW on Windows is now available for Intel and AMD GPUs. ProRes RAW can now be imported across both platforms with all the major GPUs."

The reason I've dropped this link in here isn't for the Remote Proxy Editing feature for FCP X. It's because a slow scroll of this article really gives you an easy sense of how Frame.io is quickly iterating its service into something much much than 'Review & Approve'. If you've not been paying attention, this article will give you a solid sense of Frame.io's development (and why you might not want to ignore them).
The burning question is: Does iMovie expose the Dolby Vision trim controls???

This is a nice summation of the full review. I especially like the 'wattage from the wall' chart as you start adding more GPUs. Also interesting is a chart showing Puget's Davinci Resolve 'GPU Effects Score'.

Following up on last week's item: "Sony’s PR rep would only confirm that the display can reproduce the Adobe RGB color space, but I couldn’t find out anything about the backlight design, whether the display can handle HDR images and high frame rates, and what version of the HDMI interface is employed." There are more details in the full article.

"To see how well GPU-based hardware decoding works, we will be using two different test systems - one that supports Intel Quick Sync, and one that does not. This will let us see how well the new GPU decoding works, and how it compares to hardware decoding with Intel Quick Sync."

"AJA Video Systems updated its FS-HDR real-time HDR/WCG converter and frame synchronizer with a free firmware update – v4.0 – so professionals can take advantage of the latest BBC HLG LUT improvements. A new ColorFront Engine TV Mode was part of the new features added, which included v1.4 BBC HLG LUTs, and more." More details in the article.
"Patch days this year have been fairly stressful and repeatedly cause significant problems. Unfortunately, Tuesday 10/20/2020 wasn't much different and there are already some reports of some issues with audio, BSODs, applications, etc. Thankfully for most of our users, it's been a pretty uneventful update and comes with a slew of pretty neat fixes and updates."

This really is a nifty box: "If you need access to high-speed networking, additional ports, multiple monitors, and additional card readers, this is a one-stop solution."
