Late Saturday evening is quickly approaching. I've only gotten through half my RSS feed, as my final end-of-summer 2-week hiatus closes out. But already this Newsletter is full.

At the moment I want to say this: Do you want to understand why the top of this masthead and the bottom of this Introduction features a link to the Rosettsa@Home Team Page?

If yes then watch this short video about how crowd-sourced computing power is making a difference in the fight against Coronavirus (and more).

If you're on the Team - thanks for being part of the solution! If not, now's a good time to join!

Enjoy this week's Newsletter. I'll see you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!

(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to 'newsletter@taoofcolor.com'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

A review of Larry Jordan's new book that one part theory, one part production, and one part post-production.

"In the end we realised the importance of price positioning for buyers. Once a buyer has an idea of 'what a product should cost' or 'what is reasonable to spend on this kind of product' it can be very hard to change that." This article is about display pricing - and it's good. But reading it I couldn't help but connect some of these insights to anyone selling anything - including creatives. Read the article to see if you agree?

If you're interested in understanding HDMI more deeply, this blog post is a great read:

"The HDMI spec includes several protocols and capabilities that are key to successfully transmitting audio, video, and other digital messages from source (STB) to sink (display) devices . . . A high-quality Netflix experience on the STB device depends on the correct implementation of each of these capabilities, so we have a vested interest in thoroughly testing them."

(video) Luke Ross wrote me saying he was inspired by Filmlight's recent 90-minute webinar on Copying/Pasting Grades in Baselight. Luke's video clocks in at a pithy 6.5 minutes. But he shares the link to the Filmlight webinar if you want to dig even deeper.
(video) Luke Ross switches toolsets, "We'll take inspiration from 1980s Gotham City in the Joker and build a similar look using simple primary and secondary grades." As usual, to-the-point.

(video) "Jamie is going to show how he uses the power of Colourlab Ai from a point of a documentary filmmaker. He will show how to create filmic looks and match various cameras."

Connect is for multi-station remote collaboration in the same timeline, syncing the Color Finale adjustments between stations in near real-time.

Using Livegrade Pro or Silverstack Lab: "We want to take a look at what you can do with these grading nodes, illustrate a few best practices for using them in real productions, and point out the consequences for the production’s color pipeline and workflow."

"The Pivot Lite hardware, says the company, 'runs successfully over a premium internet connection but at bandwidths that make it applicable for at-home use. With a lower bandwidth requirement enabling streaming at 2K with as little as 100 Mbps and 150mbps for UHD or 4K.' " At the end of the article is a link for a discount that ends on Sept. 30.

"Drive is a virtual storage volume for media, documents, and other files. Postlab users can utilize the original workflow and continue with local media - or they can expand remote capabilities with the addition of Drive storage." For FCPx.

If the new Mac Pro has you ready to migrate off your Windows production machine, then there are some good ideas in here to help you cover your bases.

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

"While it is a bit odd that the RTX 3080 has less VRAM than the 2080 Ti, all three of these new cards should all be capable of working with 4K timelines in DaVinci Resolve. If you want to work with 8K and above media only the 3090 (with 24GB of VRAM) would meet our current recommendation." Get the numbers and analysis at the link.

"How fast is the Pro W5500X compared to the three other Apple factory GPUs?"

"The RTX 3090 may be the first component in a long time which actually lives up to every smegging manufacturer boast and frelling press release; more so than even a Titan ever did."

"Three things to know when choosing memory for the 2020 iMac 5K 8-core or 10-core..."

What? Tao Newsletter sponsor OWC has entered the LTO space with a plug-and-play Thunderbolt 3 & 4 external drive solution. It reads and writes LTO-7, LTO-8 tapes. Oh - it also can store up to 16TB for 'staging' media for offloading. Plus several other handy features! Hmmm...
"With the 980 PRO there is a significant difference in overall makeup – other than the new PCIe Gen4 Samsung-designed controller (Elpis). What is it? The NAND itself, which is described as “3-bit MLC” (TLC)." The article keeps going from there...

This is an interesting look at the Chinese display industry, how the trade war with the US is shaping that industry, and the major players that can't be ignored.

Not as speedy as it's PCIe 4.0 controller - but with double the capacity of their previous version (which I'm using quite happily).
Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
(video) An amazing video: "In our every day lives, light is instantaneous - but in the context of our solar system and beyond, light is surprisingly slow." (via Robbie Carman)

Oh. OH. Definitely not funny (but definitely tricky): "This graphic looks at 29 different psychological tricks that marketers use to try and influence consumer behavior."

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday.
