Flanders Scientific Professional SDR & HDR Paired Reference Monitors
The DM240 SDR Mastering Monitor pairs perfectly with the XM311K HDR Mastering Monitor.

They are an excellent visual match allowing you to be certain that the differences between your HDR and SDR monitors are from your grade–rather than differences in display technology.

The Craft

(webinar) "By the end of this session, you'll understand Dailies processing for ACES-based productions and how to handle VFX round trips without compromising the image. You'll also get a dive in Peder's workflow for color grading workflows that implement ACES in DaVinci Resolve's node tree, while avoiding pitfalls and mistakes." Free. Registration required. Thursday, June 18. Noon Eastern.
I really enjoyed reading this profile. Yvan's story is interesting and he does a good job sharing what he likes about Baselight. (via Twain Richardson)
An interesting article revolving around display capabilities, high frame rate (HFR) acquisition/distribution, judder, and the future of HFR technology.
Referenced in the Display Daily article about HFR, "TrueCut Motion Grading tool suite is the industry’s first solution to give filmmakers the ability to cinematically fine-tune Motion Blur, Judder and Frame-rate appearance. The tool suite is a key element in the TrueCut video platform and includes a Motion Decision List (MDL)." There are several white papers for download off this home page.
"Sent to California and New York Governors last week, the 22-page white paper from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is an evolving guideline for the industry to get back to work, starting on June 12."
According to this article, Discovery is saving $300k per hour of programming the last few months. My first thought... did Discovery pay rental fees for their staff's usage of personal homes and other devices, plus media offloading time? The article discusses the implications this is having on budgets going forward. (via Marc Wielage)

In addition to supporting additional X-Rite devices and AutoCal for various consumer displays, "Among one of the key highlights of Calman 2020 is the introduction of the new ‘Bodner’ meter profiling method for TVs that utilize RGBW-based OLED Panels . . . created by LG Electronics, [Bodner] provides increased accuracy when profiling colorimeters on 48”-88” WRGB OLED display devices."
(webinar) In this online live Mistika Masterclass, you will learn how to quickly and efficiently automate your multi-master deliveries in just five simple steps. Registration required. June 18.
(videos) These past few months I've shared a variety of videos with Baselight colorists sharing their insights into that platform. This page compiles those videos for your convenience.
Tao Newsletter reader Twain Richardson pointed me to this summary page of the recorded Filmlight webinars I've been sharing these past few months.
If you're still in the market for remote collaboration tools (and who isn't?)... "We presently don’t offer Media Composer . . . Blackmagic does allow DaVinci Resolve to be virtualized and we support it on BeBop." It'll be interesting to see if Black Magic builds as much integration into BeBop as they have into Frame.io? Or if they decide to roll their own virtualization solution?
(webinar) "This webinar will take you through every step of using Daylight on a production to manage media, sync audio, colour grade, generate reports, and render out your deliverables for editorial, VFX, and reviews." June 18. Registration required.
(videos) Last month was the virtual Post | Production World event. It looks like Apple has sponsored the tracks with their products, making them free to the world. Embeds and more info at the click.

Gear Heads
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.
If you're looking to build a top-of-the-line rig or a more modest render node then this article will guide you. Intel rules the gaming builds while AMD is aces for value, extreme, and budget cpu builds.
Scott Simmons does a good job both reviewing the gear and showing how he uses it in the Work from Home era. Personally, the ATEM Mini Pro I ordered is still out of stock (supposedly I've got an end of June ship date).
Oliver Peters laments a gap in Apple's product mix, "What I ultimately want is a reasonably powerful Mac without being forced to also purchase an Apple display as this isn’t always the best option. But I want that without spending as much as on a car to get there." In this thought experiment, he offers his ideal solution to the Apple-verse.

Gary Adcock explains the implications of this upcoming hardware change on Apple products, looks back at how previous transitions went, and talks about its impact on the post production industry. A good read, especially if you're not intimately familiar with this geek speak.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

Fun. Personally, I think I like the design.

This seems like a fun reason to finally pick up a VR headset: "Cannes XR Virtual is free and accessible to all VR headsets’ owners. The event will be live from June 24 to 26, then accessible on replay until July 3rd."

Heh, they said hemp! Definitely in the fun-but-not-too-fun category, given the lack of THC dispensing. But these headphones do allow you to be hip-and-clean.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday.
