Today is Mother's Day... so a big shout-out to my quarantined Mom! In fact, this is a big shout out to all quarantined Moms reading this.

As I write this I realize, the only reason I know Sunday is here is that I have to publish this Newsletter. Otherwise, weekdays and weekend days? They are just merging into 'days'.

I'll email you again next Sunday - which will be your cue that it is indeed, a Sunday. Until then...

Stay busy. Stay healthy.

Happy Grading!

(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to 'newsletter@taoofcolor.com'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
(virtual NAB) Post|Production World is the training arm of the annual NAB gathering. Across dozens of rooms, hundreds of presentations are given. From May 17-19 these are all going online. The pricing is aggressively good (in my opinion). It's a great opportunity to dive into off-the-color-grading-path topics by professionals in their crafts. Click to check out the details.
"The task force will focus on the sustainable resumption of the production and post production industry service sector with the aim of understanding how to enable content creation in an evolving world impacted by the pandemic."
(virtual course) A 3-day course on HDR with Kevin Shaw. 20-22 May 2020.
(virtual courses) The International Colourist Academy (ICA) is moving online. This page takes you to a list of their course calendar.
(webinar) This is a four-day 2-hour/day event, "In this course, you will learn how to make beautiful looks, but before you can master the techniques for look design you must first learn about Color Management." May 11-14.
The fascinating story of how Newton related the refracted colors from a prism to musical scales. And how he refused to change his initial explanation even when presented with oppositional data. Why mess with a good thing, I suppose? (via Kevin Shaw)

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your tool chest with new techniques and approaches.
"[Colour Space] is available for pre-order, which enables participation in the open beta program to provide feedback and input for the final release."

How did I miss this back in April? This is the announcement detailing the latest update to the specification including ACES Metadata File (AMF), Common LUT File (CLF), ACEScsc. Click through for details on each of these items.
This is a good explanation of the new ACES AMF sidecar, its benefits, and how one DIT toolset is managing it.
"We’ll show you how it’s done . . . from opposite sides of the continent using Frame.io’s integration with Resolve, along with our latest app, Frame.io Transfer, which we decided to release ahead of schedule as a beta specifically to help enable this kind of workflow." (via Rich Roddman)
If you're new to LUTs (Look Up Tables) or if you're new to the notion of 'Image Transforms' then this article is for you. It demystifies the terms and places them in context.
"Frame.io v3.6 introduces powerful new security and asset management tools, including Watermark ID, Frame.io Transfer, enhanced integrations, and a lot more."
Are you learning Fusion and need to deconstruct some scripts. Jamie has two new ones for you with a background element that grows as the line of text grows.
This would be sad if it weren't also funny - and unsurprising: "Continuing my search for a script to remove all Autodesk software from a computer makes progress, only to find a totally new, and major problem."
They seem to have updated this handy guide for Windows users: "Basic guide to troubleshooting Windows updates with how-to's on restarting update service, running DISM and using the update assistant."

(video) Learn how to leverage a powerful ACES workflow without the normal limitations by customizing it in a DaVinci Resolve node tree. This includes properly managing Text, Fusion comps, and OpenFX that normally break in an ACES managed workflow.
(webinar) High Dynamic Range color correction is a tangle of terminology, workflows, delivery standards, and techniques. Learn the basics in an hour. Tuesday, May 12, 2 pm Eastern. Registration required.
(video) This webinar replay is free in front of the paywall until May 15. Topic summary: "Are you confused about what is ACES? What is it used for? How do you use and implement ACES within DaVinci Resolve? This webinar is for you."
Do your images need to look more colorful? In this Insight, learn 3 color separation tools for increasing perceptual colorfulness (without dialing up saturation).

The Gear
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.
This is a good primer on eGPUs with a tip to decide if one is right for you?

Step 1: Buy 8K panel from LG or Samsung. Step 2: Find your favorite 8K YouTube channel. Step 3: Watch your panel from a distance of 20 inches so you can see the enhanced resolution. But if you want to know what codec YouTube is streaming for 8K? Click through.

I saw this at NAB 2019. Or rather, the final stereoscopic image which filled a 10-inch screen that made it tough for more than one person to view simultaneously. The full details are brilliant:

"The prototype display system developed to produce the image included fourteen 4K (3840 x 2160 pixel) resolution projectors arranged in parallel. Each projector displayed multi-view images consisting of 25 viewpoints, 5 horizontal and 5 vertical each with a resolution of 768 x 432 pixels."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
(video) So how does a single shot music video get 63 million views over the past 5 years? Let's just say, this song is 'all about that bass' but there's some treble going on, too. Definitely fun for the dads on Mother's Day. (via Kevin Shaw)
(video) Brilliant! I wish I had a Lego set to try this, "This is built using a structural principal called tensional integrity (tensegrity for short), where all the chains are under tension due to the distribution of mass in the system." Click to see the video in action - and how to build it.
The name TiVo is very nostalgic for me. Finally, they release a product I might actually buy in this digital age - mostly to access a remote that isn't stupidly over-complicated or so simple you can't tell if it's upside down or not (AppleTV, I'm looking at you). Plus, there's no mention of an embedded Alexa or Google microphone! The price? Not bad, especially the introductory offer.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday.
