The Tao Newsletter Celebrates Its 9th Birthday!

On July 18, 2010 I sent my very first Tao Newsletter. It looked ugly awful. But it shipped! And we've been shipping for 9 years. It's a total of 411 Sunday mornings.

Thanks to everyone reading this for making it happen! The Open rate for this Newsletter is still astounding (over 40% per week). I guess we're still doing something right, here at Tao HQ :-)

If you happen to work at a company that's a fit to be a Newsletter Sponsor then let me know (just hit Reply)! Over the August break I'd like to line up another Sponsor or two, to be sure we go another 9 years...

About That Upcoming August Break

Several years ago I started taking the month of August off from publishing this Newsletter. Call it a 'mental health hiatus'. It's amazing what having several consecutive Saturdays free from my publishing duties does for my well being - not to mention my relationship with the Tao Treasurer.

Next Sunday is the last Newsletter before the August break. We will return Sunday September 8. Just an early FYI.

Happy Grading!

(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to 'newsletter@taoofcolor.com'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

I like the answers - and questions - in this short Q/A style profile.

Last year I mentioned this non-linear 'interactive' film produced for Netflix. I've since watched it - and after my decisions led to the movie ending in about 45 minutes, I wasn't interested enough to go back and try again. That said, this article is about its unique and complex editorial process.

(video) The only problem I have with this particular plugin is that clients start expecting its magic on shots it doesn't handle well (where the face turns away from camera). If you've not used it or need a refresher - check it out!

Get the low-down...

(video) "The last few posts have been about both the corrective and creative uses of color manipulation. Now it’s time to get purely creative with the most over-the-top color manipulation plug-in in After Effects: Colorama. This powerful effect is initially overwhelming, because it can do so much from sedate tinting to psychedelic color cycling."

"There are not a lot of books on digital workflow for film & TV out there, but Barbara Clark really knows her stuff. This was pretty much all there was for the 1990s, but they finally updated it for modern times, all-digital capture, and HD and 4K HDR. The other authors include a post exec at Disney and also two other post supervisors." (via Marc Wielage)

If you were waiting to upgrade your GPU until this card was released then don't hold your breath...

Or rent a computer for onsite color grading? I've used the service talked about in this article. With similar results.

When I talk to display geeks, they often say the future of HDR and Wide Color Gamut is LCD. Why? Power consumption for OLED limits its brightness rather substantially. OLED can't generate bright enough pixels without blowing household fuses. LCDs? Not a concern - they can go several thousands nits using normal household currents. This article documents recent research into the OLED power problem.

This review is similar to almost any LG OLED review the past few years. But there is one exception, listed in the 'What We Didn't Like' section.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

I've been going to the Hayden Planetarium my whole life. Love it. This is a terrific behind the scenes of Christie's one-of-kind domed projection system that may make Hayden the first HDR planetarium in the world.

Yikes! A pricing mistake on Prime Day. A really BIG pricing mistake.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next week!
