Congrats to Portrait Displays and the CalMAN team (former sponsors of this newsletter) for winning this award! It's for their work on CalMAN integration in LG OLEDs via AutoCal.

If you're going to use a consumer display in your grading suite, you need a tool to test and optimize image processing (although I still advocate a LUT box and CalMan or LightSpace for proper calibration out of your grading workstation).

Tao Colorist reader Jonas Westling has published his Masters Thesis on HDR, how it changes the work of the colorist, and colorist concerns about this new 'creative space'. I don't understand half of the concepts in the Abstract but I look forward to reading the whole thing.

The Gear
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and camera odds-and-ends.

Why is this in here? Because this Newsletter is written by a colorist in love with control surfaces of all kinds. This bit of kit seems focused for you Premiere users out there.

I've never heard of this cert - which deals with 'excessive' blue light and flickering. Frankly, I find it a bit confusing since it seems to me they're testing white points?

A nice recap of digital display technologies (DVI, HDMI, and Display Port) before running the numbers on DisplayPort 2.0 (and why it may not matter that much).

The interesting bit in this article is at the bottom where they point Mac users to various resources dedicated to extending the life of old MacPros.

"X570 marks the first consumer motherboard chipset to feature native PCIe 4.0 – which can double the bandwidth available for everything from SSDs to video cards."

If you want the faster speed you'll need their 500-series boards.

BUT - it's not quite here, even if it's being broadcast in some markets. This article is a solid primer on what to expect, when to expect, and some interesting privacy concerns that never existed previously with over-the-air broadcasting.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
We featured this item a few weeks ago. But as the 50th Anniversary is here on July 16, I want to make sure you don't miss this!

(video) A fun 2-minutes (well, except for the cat).
