The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
Hardly a news flash for experienced colorists. But major news for our clients!

The UK's Sunday Times had an opinion piece announcing the death of cinema, with Netflix's 'Roma' getting 10 Oscar nominations. This is Big Cinema's response to that declaration.

I'm not sure what event this was recorded at - but it was for flatpanelsHD.com. Colorist / technologist Dado Valentic explains HDR, shows how he grades, and explains the workflow to a room of non-colorists. I've only sampled this video - but I'll be carving out time to watch this during the week.
A deep look at the craft of graphic designers for film and television. What's their job and how do pros at the top of their craft approach it?

The Gear
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and camera odds-and-ends.
At the major trade shows, FSI lends tons of gear to various vendors. That gear gets labelled as 'B-Stock'. You can buy this lightly used gear from FSI at a big discounts. FSI will take this gear back to their factory, bring it back to like-new status, and then ship it to you with full warranty. Check out the savings at the link!

A great tip to understand when interacting with DPs using RED.

Due to the prevalence of Resolve content generated weekly on the intertubes, the good folks at AJA don't get much space here on this Newsletter. I also rarely link to press releases. But I'm making an exception today, "Kona 5 is a high-performance eight-lane PCIe 3.0 capture and output card featuring 12G-SDI I/O and HDMI 2.0 output . . the card is supported on AJA’s SDK for Mac OS, Windows and Linux, offering advanced features such as 8K and multi-channel 4K."

It's unlikely you'll want to shell out the extra cash for either of these processors. But if you have know if they're worth it? Then click through.

Samsung is getting out of the UHD BluRay player market. This article offers many details in their decision, the market numbers, and insights on studio releases. Personally, I can't blame them. As a trained professional I see and enjoy the advantage of UHD BluRay. But I'm building my library with much less expensive streaming versions - which massively increase the convenience with only a small hit in quality. Of course, Samsung players don't support Dolby Vision. And I usually won't buy a movie (streaming or otherwise) without DV and ATMOS support.

A GREAT write-up from the presenter on a session about the status of 8K. Why is it being pushed on us and is it ready for prime time?

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
(video) For me, the best acting performance of 2018 was Rami Malek's portrayal of Queen's Freddie Mercury. And this video is a fantastic side-by-side of the film's Live Aid performance, matched against the actual 1985 televised show (with split audio sources as well). I can't think of a better way to kick off 'Oscar Day' than spending 18 minutes watching this.
(video) Bruno Ganz is the Swiss actor who played Hitler in "Downfall". It's Bruno's Hitler you see in those 'Hitler learns...' YouTube subtitled parodies. He passed away this week, hence this tribute to Bruno and his film legacy.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next week!
