Wow. Our entire industry must be taking the new two weeks off (coinciding with Thanksgiving this coming week, here in the US).

Everyone seems to be dropping updates just before the holiday season kicks off.

Programming Note: No Newsletter Next Sunday

Next weekend is a long holiday weekend. This Newsletter will not ship next Sunday.

I'll see you in two weeks.

Happy Grading!

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your toolchest with new techniques and approaches.

This link takes you to the Read Me detailing the new features and fixes in this update. I've often said that Resolve's .1 updates are equivalent to most other company's .5 updates. I rest my case.

One happy camper with the 15.2 update? Bram Desmet at FSI. Why? Resolve 15.2 now sports a, "3000nit ST2084 EOTF selection in Resolve Color Management" - for you HDR geeks who own that gorgeous FSI XM310K (featured directly below this section of the Newsletter).
Editor and blogger Scott Simmons details why he thinks the 15.2 update is one of Resolve's most important (in converting curmudgeony old editors to DaVinci-land). Good stuff.

[video] Released concurrently with the software is this 5 minute video that details significant new features in this update. But also, highlights major features from several earlier versions that are popular on competing NLEs. BTW - this video is voiced by the well-known Mary Plumber, who was brought on to support Fairlight.

This review covers their new Flare Builder, the revamped Mocha Sapphire and a few new effects. If you're thinking of going this route for some year-end purchasing then it's worth the read.

This newest updates includes new Histograms, project wide LUTs, and enhanced color precision.
Don't let the headline fool you, this is not a Read Me cut and paste. Instead, Scott Simmons goes in-depth with the new Frame.io workflow extension, plus several other of the big new features in this update.

[video] Mixing Light's newest contributor, colorist and finisher Jamie Dickinson, takes you on an in-depth tour of Boolean operations while keying a low quality green screen. Good stuff if you want to kick up your Fusion chops.

[video] Colorist Dan Moran shares a 'behind the curtain' on creating a 1980's film release print style color grade.

The Gear
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and camera odds-and-ends.
Given Resolve's heavy reliance on GPU performance, is there much improvement for Resolve in this latest round of updates to Intel's CPUs?
How well does the Mac Mini stack up against an iMac Pro? They've got the numbers.
If you want to use the new Mac Mini as a render farm, it looks like you'll need to supplement it with an eGPU.

4K, HDR, 60p. For $5000. But how well does it calibrate? Click through to find out.

I'm linking to the Conclusion page that lays out the potential benefits to Intel's high-end CPU - and whom it might benefit.

Interesting.

The Drobo 8D is their fastest storage yet.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

[video] Veterans Day recently passed us - and in the States, Thanksgiving is on the way. If you're looking for a story to give you some perspective on life - this is it. It's fun (and timely).

If you're wondering if this Newsletter is going to link to Black Friday deals on your favorite OLED? We don't have to - this blog roundup does the job for us. And it goes well beyond deals on displays. This item is for the 'shopping is fun' crowd.
I've been curious about how celluloid films from the '90s and early '00s will hold up to HDR remastering? And this series is also remastered with ATMOS. I'll probably break down and buy the first movie - just so I can judge for myself.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you in two weeks!
