It wasn't until the very last award was announced that Game of Thrones kept HBO tied with the upstart. And so the worm turns.
He's sent out a questionnaire to DGA members. Their hope is to get TV manufacturers to create a 'fimmakers intent' mode that kills all the awful nonsense processing that TVs ship with. (via Marc Wielage)

It's an interesting question. With interesting answers.

[video] More info about this new codec (direct from BMD), recorded at IBC.
[forum] On the Cinematography Mailing List a Czech-based developer took a look at the SDK for the new Blackmagic RAW codec and offers a nicely detailed analysis. Half the stuff went over my head. The other half? Good to know.

The new format supports higher and floating point bit depths for VFX and color work. Plus other new features, outlined in this article.

With a chart showing its various formats, bit depths, and file sizes. Worth a bookmark, for the day you need to work with it.
A quick write-up on the new version, with an emphasis on the new color tools. The final line in this post is, I think, wishful thinking - but who knows? I certainly wouldn't object.
A quick visual guide to setting up surround sound in Fairlight.
Given the bold claims by its creator, you can be sure I'll be doing a review of this FCPX plugin. But until then, friend of the Tao Scott Simmons tries his hand, and shares his thoughts.
Are we kicking this horse long after its 'sell by' date? Or is this a good idea?

Pro Maintenance Tools 2.2.6 was just released with a feature that allows Mac users to downgrade Adobe Premiere projects so they can be opened in earlier versions.

A focused tool at an easy price based off their existing products. Nice.

The Gear
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and camera odds-and-ends.
In depth bench-marking and review.
And how are they compared to Intel Core i9s? Includes links to several in-depth testing for different post-production software (including Resolve).
An LTO backup app for the Mac. And much more affordable.
I've been using Vudu on the LG for over year, specifically for their UHD Dolby Vision / ATMOS content. It's easily the highest quality catalog of the streaming services. The 4K AppleTV may give it a run, but an annoyingly large number of Disney distributed titles are HD-only on AppleTV.
An interesting discussion of what's facing projector manufacturers - and the challenges facing consumers.

Home antenna sales are edging upward, driven by cable cutters. What I like in here is a website to help you figure what antenna you need based on the location of your house.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
A good overview on a cool space mission, "The mission profile involves a lot of robots, bullets, and explosives." Who says nerds don't have more fun?
[video] This tribute has just the right combination of syrup and nostalgia for anyone who grew up watching this show. And the production value is outstanding.
Its launched on the major streaming boxes. I guess it's a cable channel that's streaming-only, since it has original content? I suppose it'll be fun for some of this Newsletter's subscribers.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday!
