Whenever I write these words, "IBC is upon us", you know two things are true:
  1. The Newsletter is back from its August hiatus (think of that August break as your Publisher's mental health month).

  2. The IBC Colorist Mixer is a week away!
At the time of this writing, the IBC 5th Annual Colorist Mixer is almost Sold Out!

There are less than a dozen tickets available for the Mixer and the new Color Cruise (which includes entry to the Mixer). If you're going to IBC and are in Amsterdam on Saturday then stop right here and click this link to grab your spot:

This week I'm sharing stories from August. I was expecting to have a huge backlog to choose between. But it seems I wasn't the only person slowing down in August. I've left a few stories for the next Newsletter. But we're basically caught up.

So until next week...

Happy Grading!!!

A roundup of tips from a range of online sources about breaking into this end of the business.

If you only read this for Sonnenfeld's great rant about the ever-awfulness of movie theaters then my job is done. His rant about HDR seems more to do with being forced to master to HDR even if you didn't shoot for it.
This article is on-point about lack of content supporting this new format - but that's not what I find interesting. It's the comments that are interesting; arguing points colorists have argued for the past 3 years. As artists, these are objections we need to help others overcome - if you believe and want to foster the development of HDR.
Distribution is ready. But where is the actual content? Additional information.

In a digital streaming world we should have access to every movie ever made, for a price. Yes? It turns out, even for the top 4,000 grossing films of the last 20 years... not so much.

This Newsletter shies away from including 'newsitorials'. And while there's lots of Live Grade Pro puffery in this article, there's also enough actual workflow and flavor in here to make it a good read if you're interested in on-set workflows and responsibilities.

An interesting fusion of hardware and software, it's a plugin that has it's own, tactile-driven keyboard. For FCP X. Interesting.

"If you add an eGPU Box with a Vega Frontier to a 2018 MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.9GHz 6-core i9, will it bring the performance even with the 8-core iMac Pro?" I feel bad for the iMac Pro.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
[video] YES! Fun. Funny. Legos.
[video] When I was a kid I was promised two things: Flying cars. And holograms. The former? A lie. The latter? This is getting MUCH closer. Scroll down to watch the video. Then read the article for more details.
Looking for a weekend project? Then walk away. As this guy built this 120" screen home theater - all by himself.
Neither fun nor funny. But if you're upgrading your home theater to UHD HDR then you will run across this HDMI technology when setting it up.
Netflix is experimenting with squeezing extra cash out its HDR-loving subscribers. No word if they plan on expanding the bulk of their Dolby Vision content beyond live comedians (because, you know, nothing screams for HDR like a single person telling jokes on stage). Unfunny.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday!
