Can you believe we're rolling into the end of July? Already? And shouldn't people be starting their vacations?

You wouldn't know it from the flood of color grading-related stories worth sharing. I've got a nice backlog of 'evergreen' stories that I'll send out when this Newsletter starts its annual August hiatus.

Happy Grading!!!

See you next week (our last official Newsletter before the August summer break).

Featuring the work of creative craftsmen and the theory of color. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
A commercial colorist talks about his process for dealing with remote clients. I wholeheartedly agree with his rationale for not liking stills for approvals. Good stuff, as always, from Rob Bessette.
My boss (back in my GVG Kadenza days) and friend of the Tao, Michel Suizza, is featured on this article about HDR workflows. It talks about the how an integrator like B&H The Studio has been challenged by the HDR transition.

[video] Colorist Andreas Bruecki shows why having VFX skills is becoming critical for commercial colorists. Or is that VFX / Flame artists are starting to pick up tools like Baselight and Resolve with Fusion and integrating color grading? (via Dan Moran)

A quick Q&A on what drives this China-based freelance colorist.

How many World Cup team colors can be properly displayed in the BT.709 color gamut? Will Wide Color Gamut make a difference for the next World Cup? Click through to find out.
If you're near London on Thursday, 2 August then you'll want to register for this event featuring the FSI 3000 nit display. While there, you can heckle my Mixing Light business partner, Dan Moran, who is demo'ing (just tell him the Tao made you do it). Click through for full event and ticket information.

A deeper dive into the BBC solution that they were thrilled with for the Royal Wedding earlier this year. Interesting tidbits include the handling of saturation between SDR and HDR conversions (in the context of live events). If you're interested in HDR this is a good tech-heavy read.

[video] Kevin Shaw CSI has this fantastic tutorial showing non-standard, very interesting techniques for managing saturation in DaVinci Resolve. He leverages Resolve's YRGB pipeline to give you alternatives to just cranking up (or down) that Sat knob. Highly recommended.
[webinar] Editor Scott Simmons has been editing a project in Resolve 15. It's his first attempt at using Resolve exclusively as an NLE. This seminar shares his experience and offers tips. July 24. Register to be reminded.
Get the details on the new build of CalMAN.
I'm linking to the new features in LAB, the more advanced of the two toolsets. New features include new Metadata reporting, new exporting options, scopes, copy/verify options - and more.
[video] For the raw newbie, Jonny walks you through getting started with SCRATCH.
Another solid informational post about how metadata moves from camera to cart. They show three methods and the cart setups for capturing data through each.
It's nice seeing Avid realize they need to modernize their app - and start executing. Let's hope they keep it up. Competition between 4 major NLEs (yes, I now include DaVinci Resolve) is good for all of us.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
Funny in a ridiculous (and tasty) manner.
[video] THIS is fun. Fantastic photography of a giant duststorm rolling into Yuma, Arizona. Remarkable.
I've got a strong libertarian bent when it comes to government regulation. But it seems Silicon Valley is losing its way and needs parental supervision. Embedding voice recognition into all our devices is nuts. At least I can remove the battery from AppleTV's remote with built-in Siri. What's my option on a 55" OLED? Not funny.
Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday!
