A HUGE shout out to the Up.Graders in Berlin - who posted a great Twitter image of them reading this Newsletter (it's the first item in the The Craft). Y'all brought smiles to this Publisher, all week long. Thanks!

This Newsletter may not ship next Sunday. We typically take holiday weekends off (including July 4). But I'm working Thursday and Friday, so we'll see.

Finally, be sure to check out the HDR Flight Path in the Mixing Light section - if only for the great collection of links for authoritative HDR sources. Team Mixing Light is proud of our HDR / Dolby Vision coverage and we think that page is a useful resource.

Happy Grading!!!

See you next week. Possibly (but definitely in two weeks).

Seriously awesome. Click through to see a group of Tao Newsletter colorists share this Sunday ritual! Fantastic. Thank you UP.GRADERs Berlin! And I hear you loud and clear (scroll to the bottom and be happy)...
Marc Weilage writes in: "Terrific news to report: Four LA colorists were elected to membership in the Motion Picture Academy . . . The colorists include: David Cole (Fotokem), Sheri Eisenberg (Roundabout), Stephen Nakamura (CO3), Walter Volpatto (Fotokem) . . . These are all good solid people with decades of post-production work -- they totally deserve the honor." Congrats to all!
Colorist & Teacher Warren Eagles recorded short interviews with a dozen colorists (including your humble Publisher) at the 2018 NAB Colorist Mixer. Take a listen!
This is a soft piece featuring the work done on 3 recent tentpole films. To me, it's more about how much of the Look is created before a single frame hits the colorist's reference display. Some interesting workflows are discussed - but no granular details.
A collection of resources and ideas about building your career in a 'gig' economy. I'm not a big fan of the final idea - which is ripe for abuse.
The L.A. event was so good this past February that they're taking the show on the road. Starting this weekend through the rest of July. Atlanta, DC, Miami, Chicago, Austin.

Pull quote: "An in-depth look at how to prepare for and edit high-resolution RED footage for every kind of project, regardless of the NLE you use." Honestly, I think of this article more for our clients - who often are clueless about the implications of their on-set decisions.

An interesting thought piece - not just about FCPx but about all the current NLEs. And their ability (or inability) to integrate the Machine Learning storm that's brewing outside our suites. If you're not on FCPx then read this article substituting your tool of choice.

[video] What were we just saying about Machine Learning? Here's an FCP color plugin that claims to do all the work for you via algorithms. It even supports LUTs.
Get the details on this latest update to the Silverstack suite (for on-set data management).
A new service with 600,000 video assets. This is here for my freelancing friends looking for an edge.
The Frame.io blog is very high quality. And so is this Primer to color correcting in Premiere Pro. Lots of astute tips for anyone trying to stay within that app for grading.
[video] If you're a finisher on the Mac using FxFactory then check out this new app for subtitles.
[video] Seriously, I love the Sapphire packages for lighting effects. And its much more affordable to own than it used to be (but may too pricey if you don't need this kind of tool on a regular basis).

I love the websites that colorist Dan Moran shares in this Insight. And his approach to building a personal library of reference Looks that keep him (and his clients) inspired.
My business partner Robbie Carman has been on fire, sharing his experiences working in HDR. This is another great contribution for those of us following in his footsteps.
A new feature on Mixing Light is 'Flight Paths'. Each Path is built around a core topic. It lists the top related content on Mixing Light. And on many topics, like this one, links out to authoritative 'external' resources. Check it out and bookmark it!
The Gear
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and camera odds-and-ends.

Of note for this audience: Support for the new Decklink 8K Pro. And for finishers: improved closed caption support in Adobe CC suite.

This should calm the jitters of recent MacBook Pro owners.

If you're on a Mac, which option gives you better performance? That said... the results in this testing run counter to what I've been told (except for those CUDA results).
This headline is a bit of click-bait but SD Express is coming. The details in this article are worth the read, including a chart showing different transfer rates depending on SD card type and Host adapter.
The numbers are NOT what anyone predicted for 2018.
If you're pricing out a color grading build around this 2nd generation platform then get a sense of initial costs in this article.
[video] Nvidia is using Machine Learning to improve on traditional slo-mo. There are visible errors I wouldn't tolerate. And they're not comparing to optical flow. But they have to start somewhere...
Think: Kindle meets LG. It's fun reading what they consider 'progress' on their contrast ratios and color gamuts. But hey - we all start with baby steps.

Beyond 'The Box'
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun(nies) that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

[video] Spoilers! But if you're fans of this series (Tao HQ is) then this is definitely fun.

Remember all those cruddy 1960s moon images? Turns out NASA kept the hi resolution versions to themselves. They look fantastic.

In the Northern Hemisphere it's that time of year where mosquitoes and ticks cause all sorts of problems. I've asked the Tao Treasurer to cook up this receipe. I thought I'd share it here, too - since I *know* all you post pros are getting some outside time now that summer is here. RIGHT?
The EU seems buoyed by the lack of pushback on its GDPR overreach. So now they want to regulate hyperlinking (!) and screen everything posted to the internet within the EU. Definitely: NOT funny.
Th- th- th- that's all folks! See you next Sunday!
