The Tao Colorist Newsletter

Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor
for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sunday.

            Issue CCCXLVI                                                                A TaoOfColor.com Publication

Publisher: Pat Inhofer                                                   Managing Editor: Jim Wicks

From the Publisher
  • This is the Sunday before Thanksgiving, as celebrated in these United States. I'm writing here now for two reasons:

This Newsletter will be off next Sunday

  • It allows the Staff to get some recharge time. And it allows our readers to free up a little time. We suggest using the time to take a brisk walk, or surprise your significant other by cooking a meal or taking them out to a movie.
  • Use the time to do something different - since that adds spice to our lives.

This Publisher is very thankful
  • First, I'm thankful for the Tao Treasurer who has tolerated 5 years of Saturdays devoted to writing, formatting and preparing this publication. And she even assists in preparing this publication every week, for which I'm also very grateful.
  • I'm thankful for you, our dear readers. It's not that you open these emails that makes me thankful - it's how you spread the word of the Newsletter, because you find it valuable and worthy of your recommendation. That's the most valuable form of thanks you can ever give me - and I appreciate it.
  • I'm thankful to the Desmet family of Flanders Scientific (and their employees) for being such strong supporters of this Newsletter and the endeavours of the Tao of Color. I can state definitively, they aren't just advertisers. They've become friends.
  • I'm thankful to Sam of Lumaforge. The former was a reader and member of the Tao, only to become an advertiser when the opportunity arose.
  • I'm thankful to Pliny of EndCrawl. He's a super-smart, multi-talented post-production pro who took a leap of faith and has found synergy with our readers.
  • I'm thankful to Robbie and Dan of Mixing Light, my business partners in our mentoring website, which itself has become an advertiser to this Newsletter. The Tao Newsletter's purpose is an extension of the work we do together - and so they invest in you and me.
  • My final thanks, isn't last in my thoughts. It's last because, in my mind, all the prior thanks allow me to keep him working on this Newsletter. I'm speaking of our Managing Editor, Jim Wicks. Every week he lightens my load. Every week he's here, with a passion for sharing.
  • As our long-time readers know, this publication almost folded 3 years ago - if not for Jim stepping up and shouldering the weight. Without him, you wouldn't be reading this.
Thank you, Jim.
  • Enjoy this week's Newsletter. We'll see you next Sunday.
Happy Grading!

The Craft
  • [video] Five Color Grading Mistakes to Avoid - in your video work. This video is directed at filmmakers and begins with this nugget: "The hard part is that color grading takes years to master. It's a really hard area to get really good at."  (fstoppers.com)
  • Art of the Manual White Balance - color correcting shots that were never properly white balanced on set has become standard operating procedure for the colorist. Art Adams shares why you can't just white balance the camera. You also need to white balance your lights. Great stuff. (provideocoalition.com)
  • Color Plays a Big Role in 'The Florida Project' - "The very first instruction that I got from (director) Sean (Baker) was to make it look real, then dial it up a notch.” Technicolor New York's Senior Colorist Sam Daley talks about the craft and his DaVinci Resolve workflow. (postperspective.com)
  • [video] What It's Like For an Artist to Suddenly See Color -  "(Daniel) Arsham is colorblind, and that has been a defining theme of his work over the past decade. His sculptures are typically black, white, or shades of grey." But all that changed after receiving a special pair of glasses that allows him to see more color. (quartzy.qz.com)
  • [podcast] Into the archives: Robert A. Harris Part 2 - discusses "his restoration work on My Fair Lady, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Godfather and the digital reconstruction of It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." (podomatic.com)
  • How to match cameras in post - from shooting through post. Detailed, tedious but good if you're new to the concept. (filmconvert.com)
  • [video] How Dolby is measuring human emotions to hack hollywood - visit "the biophysical labs at Dolby, where the company is striving to prove that more realistic imagery — for example, the kind of ultrabright picture you get using HDR technology . .  . increases an audience’s emotional response to movie scenes." Very cool stuff. Definitely worth the watch. (studiodaily.com)
  • Lighting 103: Takeaways - a GREAT read for colorists. A sample, "There is a logic to the color structure of light. If you give it even a little thought, color ideas will come to you, "Create Color Contrast in Your Shadows" and "Be Brave and Be Bold". (strobist.blogspot.com)

The Tools
  • [video] Transition Between Grades! - how to transition between grades in DaVinci Resolve "doing some color trickiness with the edit tab". Personally, not our favorite way of doing this (since it's mouse-heavy) but you should know about it. (youtube.com)
  • DaVinci Resolve 14.1 Update - new features include: video scopes displayed on the Edit page, support for RED IPP2 color processing, drag and drop .drp project files into the Project Manager, and much MUCH more. The link is to the Read Me. We're happy to see their bug fixes being listed so granularly. (blackmagicdesign.com)
  • [review] DaVinci Resolve 14 Color Page - "I have been a long-time advocate of the idea that a colorist doesn’t change the color of a sequence, but changes the mood of it. Manipulating the color is just one path to that result, so I am happy to see more creatively expansive facilities being added." (postperspective.com)
  • [videos] Histograms (And What They Mean) - "Histograms can help you properly expose your projects both in-camera and in post. Find out how with this practical guide."  (premiumbeat.com)
  • The Newest Audio Features in Resolve’s Edit Page - like the title says. Fairlight is great, but there are audio features on the Edit page allowing you to "still perform all of the previous audio edits that were available in 12.5." (premiumbeat.com)
  • [video] What’s new in Avid Media Composer 8.9.3 - " some pretty cool new features in it, some of which are simple workflow enhancements . . . and some are essential workflow updates . . . " (provideocoalition.com)
  • Final Cut Pro X gets VR, Color Controls and more - a look at the highlights of new tools in the forthcoming release of FCP 10.4. (nofilmschool.com)
  • Export YouTube Ready subtitles directly from Premiere Pro - because some of you are finishers who have to deliver this type of stuff. (premiumbeat.com)
  • Red Giant releases Universe 2.2 - "This release of RGU gives users access to eleven new transitions , but the two biggest new features are . . . " (provideocoalition.com)

  • Vimeo Now Supports HDR and 8K Resolution - " HDR playback is available on the Apple iPhone X, iPad Pro and Apple TV 4K — but not on any desktop Apple systems." What about Android? And if you want to watch on an SDR source? Click through for details. (studiodaily.com)

  • Thor: Ragnarok: Hilarious… except for the 3D - at Tao HQ we stopped doing the 3D releases about 18 months ago. And we've noticed 3D showings at our local cinemas have dropped dramatically. So we're not the only ones who don't care for these stereo conversions. (marketsaw.blogspot.com)
