From The Publisher
  • Some years, we don't.
  • Some years, we do.
  • Publish from NAB at Las Vegas, that is.
  • This year we wanted to, but couldn't. That's why we didn't ship last week.
  • The big news for readers of this publication... DaVinci Resolve 14.
  • Interesting news is Baselight and Mistika building their markets, differently.
  • There's too much to fit in one Newsletter, so expect stories from the past two weeks to pop up in the next few editions.
  • See you next Sunday.
Happy Grading!

The Craft
  • Meet the Colorist - “Brimstone was shot on ARRI Alexa XT full-frame raw with ARRI Master Anamorphic primes. We used a full ACES EXR workflow for the VFX, and I graded in ARRI Log C wide gamut.” Martin Klein, who graded the motion picture talks about his workflow and dialing in the look of the film. (studiodaily.com)
  • How to Redesign an Airline - "we had several versions of black: How black is black? Is it cold black? Is it warm black? When we were looking at the tones that we could use on the plane we had to work with Boeing, with the Boeing colors and they’ve got quite a small palette." An interesting interview. (99u.com)
  • On HDR Displays and Grading - "in case you're not familiar with the idea of a High Dynamic Range display, it's—get this—brighter than a normal display. That's it. This groundbreaking idea apparently needed about four competing standards, one from Dolby, the sound company. Now there's a fifth." Stu Maschwitz isn't a fan of HDR. Find out why. (prolost.com)
  • ASC Looks at HDR and Preserving the Cinematographer’s Vision - "And the panel noted that, aside from the high cost of HDR displays, there is a real issue with fatigue when an editor or colorist is staring at a 1,000-nit or brighter screen all day long." From a NAB roundtable. (studiodaily.com)
  • The Benefits of Spec Work - "on spec work, there is normally a little more room to go outside the box and push the boundaries since there is really nobody to answer to other than who is in the suite." (robbessette.com)
