            Issue CCCXXI                                                                 A TaoOfColor.com Publication

Publisher: Pat Inhofer                                                   Managing Editor: Jim Wicks

From The Publisher
  • Tao Command is running at half-capacity this week.
  • Tomorrow (Monday) is the big relaunch of MixingLight.com. And that means nothing but 16 hour days of writing and working with our programmer to get the website Launch Ready.
  • And Mixing Light is releasing two new products tomorrow (Color Correction Practice Projects)... so there's a ton of QA testing to be done.
  • This also means, I've had zero time to work on this Newsletter.
  • But no fears! That's why there's two of us... and your Tao Editor Jim Wicks has made sure we've got something for you today.
  • Enjoy this Launch-Week-Shortened edition of the Newsletter! See you next week.
Happy Grading!

From The Editor's Desk
  • Your Newsletter Publisher, Patrick, has offered me, your Newsletter Editor Jim, this space to talk about what I'm doing at NAB with the organization I co-founded a year ago, Colorist Society International (CSI).
  • At NAB 2017 CSI is organizing a number of group tours for CSI members at the booths of its corporate sponsors.
  • Additionally, because CSI is a big fan of the Tao Colorist Newsletter, these free events are also open to Tao readers who are attending NAB. Put these in your calendar and join us!
Meet CSI co-founders Jim Wicks and Kevin Shaw at the following times for booth tours:
  • Dolby #SU1702 – Monday 4/24, Tuesday 4/25 and Wednesday 4/26 at 5pm-6pm
  • FilmLight  #SL3829 – Monday 4/24 at 11am – expect an announcement that could benefit all colorists
  • FSI #SL6328 – Tuesday 4/25 at 1pm – Talking about monitors for colorists
  • S-A-M #SL1805 – Tuesday 4/25 at 3pm – Rio does HDR
  • Blackmagic Design #SL216 – Wednesday 4/26 at 4pm – check out their new colorist control surfaces

The Business
  • Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival to Close - the BAPFF ran for 3 years, replacing the Brisbane International Film Festival. Critics said the BAPFF was “a triumph of marketing and investment interests over film culture relevant to the city’s audience and filmmakers.” Ouch. (variety.com)

Secondary Thoughts
  • Premiere Pro Search Bins - friend of the Tao, Jeff Greenberg, shows you one of the best kept secrets on how to stay organized in Adobe’s NLE. “If you’re an Adobe Premiere Pro user, you’re going to want to read this article.” Nuff said, read on. (provideocoalition.com)
  • [video] Why is THIS the 'Power' Symbol? - there's a symbol we all know but probably never think about... It's the symbol on almost every 'power button' you've seen. What's the story of that symbol? There's a reason the narrator geeks out. (youtube.com)

Sunday Morning Funnies
  • [video] A Hacker’s Tips on How to Browse the ‘Net Anonymously - Kevin Mitnick, author of "The Art of Invisibility," explains how to remain anonymous online. Not because you have bad intentions - but because you want to protect your identity. Or so you tell your friends. But this is good, pithy and you should know it. (youtube.com)
  • [video] Archer Cast Makes Trading Cards (NSFW) - the cast of the animated series posits what their characters' trading card stats might look like.  (youtube.com)
Gear Heads
  • [forum] LightSpace Preview - Steve Shaw at LightSpace teased customers with a little sneak peak at new LightSpace developments for  PRO and XPT versions. (liftgammagain.com)
  • [vapor] The New MacPro (eventually) - what if Apple sat down across the table from you and admitted (a) they made a ‘misstep’ with their current ‘Pro’ computer. And (b) they haven't thought about the next version of the MacPro for the past three years. And (c) like the Eye of Sauron they are on it - you know, next year. Maybe.

Would you wait? This sit down really happened. Apple really admitted this stuff. “So where does that leave the faithful Apple-loving post-production crowd?“ (provideocoalition.com)
Showcase
  • [video] I Need a Hero - a commercial heavy on CG, comedy, and a repeating ‘punch’ line are some of the ingredients that helped propel a Kia car commercial to the top of the advertising heap.  Holding it all together is a solid grade by colorist David Ludlam. (youtube.com)

NAB Preppers
  • Focus On Color Day: Team Mixing Light - at NAB, your Tao Publisher with the other founders of MixingLight.com are giving a full day session on color grading (for the 5th year in a row). This time around we're doing a series of Case Studies to framework the teachings. And our Keynote Speaker? Mark Todd Osborne, one of the most in-demand freelance colorists in the world! Session details will be fully updated soon, at the link. It part of the paid Post | Production World training event. (nab17.mapyourshow.com)
  • Visit the LumaForge Workflow Suite @ Encore - "Our team will be showing off cross platform workflow on Mac, Window’s, & Linux machines running the latest NLE’s, VFX, finishing, and audio software. We’ll also have developers of some of the most popular post plugins with us showing off their latest updates and apps." And bring your own gear to get some editing done. Registration required. (lumaforge.com)
  • LumaForge On Stage: Faster, Together - separate from their Suite, "we’re rounding up all of our favorite people for three days of back-to-back, short and to the point, presentations and panels on all things post." Including your Publisher demoing the Collaborative Workflow on DaVinci Resolve. Looks like a good roundup of presentations. (lumaforge.com)
  • 5th Annual NAB Colorist Mixer - it started with 25 people who only knew each other on Twitter, meeting at a bar in the bowels of the Monte Carlo. Five years later, we're 300 strong at the top of the Las Vegas in the Stratosphere Tower. Join us and mingle with your peers. Newbie or veteran, creative or vendor - you are all welcome! (coloristmixer2017nab.eventbrite.com)

The Next Step Is A Doozy
  • [video] 'Bombing' the Steep Hills of San Francisco - that’s a skateboarder term. Watching this makes us think how Steve McQueen in Bullit would have fared if he had traded his Mustang for a skateboard. The other thing is how lucky this skateboarder is because there was NO traffic as he zoomed through the cross streets. Yeah, so this definitely qualifies as a Doozy. (youtube.com)

Th- Th- That's ALL Folks! We'll see you next week.
Happy Grading!

  • Color Correction Handbook, Updated - Alexis Van Hurkman has updated his Color Correction Handbook, which has set the standard for learning all things color correction. (amazon.com)
  • Color Correction Look Book - This is the second part of the Color Correction Handbook, exploring the creative techniques for over 200 different visual looks. A sort-of recipe book for colorists. (amazon.com
  • The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction - Read how a dozen different colorists grade the same footage with the same gear, differently. A fantastic approach to learning the craft of color grading by Steve Hullfish. (amazon.com)
  • Color Grading with Avid and Symphony - Written for version 6. Fully applicable to version 7. I was a contributor. (amazon.com)
  • Digital Cinematography: Fundamentals, Tools, Techniques and Workflows - Don't let the title fool you. I'm only a third way through this book and its explanations of how digital images are recorded, sampled and viewed is essential knowledge for anyone who's craft intersects with digital images. Not light reading. But not filled with math either. I highly recommend this book. (amazon.com)
