The Craft
  • [video] David Lynch on Where ideas come from - “I like to think of it as, in the other room the puzzle is altogether. But they keep flipping in one piece at a time.” The answer to the follow up question about 'where is ‘the other room’? Brilliant. He's musing on the craft of creativity. (youtube.com)
  • Meet the Colorist: Philipp Horsch - “I don't think that colourists should have a personal style. Our job consists of understanding the bigger picture and the vision of the DP, and transforming it accordingly. A colourist should be capable of using all the tools and reading the DP's mind before even thinking of anything.” Senior Colourist, BFS Entertainment (filmlight.ltd.uk)
  • What Is The Point of Art? - “Where Plato tends to see the artist as offering tempting fantasies, Aristotle explores how to use art to align the audience’s desires and emotions to their “true” targets.” Food for thought that might inspire you to become a better colorist. (prospectmagazine.co.uk)
  • The Joy of Filmmaking - “Oil painting, pastels and watercolors are all different media. You are free to choose one over the other in your personal hierarchy, but your preference is only yours. So, I think, is the claim for the superiority of digital cinematography over film or vice versa.” The ASC’s John Bailey on choice and medium.  (theasc.com)

The Business
  • YouTube Adds Support for HDR - “to make sure creators can tell awesome stories with even more color, we’ve been working with companies across the industry.” Yes, they're also supporting wide color gamuts - but don't really define it in this blog post. They do define the hardware that will 'see' the HDR goodness. (youtube.googleblog.com)
  • Why Film Has Not Been Disrupted (Yet) Part 2 - "As long as we stay focused on tricking out our gear, no matter how fun and exciting that may be, we’ll be doing nothing to change the underlying economics of visual storytelling. It’s time for film technologists to aim higher." An interesting, and short'ish, read. (endcrawl.com)
  • Watching Video On Mobile Devices Increases 85% - since 2010, "Overall TV and video viewing is up 1.5 hours per week, while there has been a 2.5 hour per week decline in television fixed screen viewing." I gotta think, plus-sized mobile screens have got to be a huge driver of that metric. (etcentric.org)
  • Who Actually Streams Movies, and What Do They Want? - "a new study on viewer streaming habits and preferences just confirmed everyone's suspicions: original content is king." Some interesting results in here. (nofilmschool.com)

Second(ary) Thoughts
  • How To Travel Safe With Lithium Batteries - "Old alkaline batteries . . .NiMH or . . .NiCad are not subject to specific restrictions, but once you get to lithium . . . it is important to know the rules before taking them for a trip abroad." YES! If you're not careful, those Lithiums will get confiscated. (provideocoalition.com)
  • DMCA Exemption To 'Reverse Engineering' Takes Effect - "people risked a lawsuit if they reverse-engineered their cars, PCs or even insulin pumps. Now, there’s an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that protects those who want to hack a device they own, without fearing that the manufacturer will sue them." But, there are still limitations. (etcentric.org)
