From The Publisher
The last time this Newsletter mentioned a hurricane... it was Sandy
  • And Tao HQ ended up with a tree through its roof and a nearly week-long power outage.
  • This week we're talking Category 4 Hurricane Matthew - and thanks to two last minute Eastwardly jumps...
Tao HQ in Orlando just missed getting hit with the outer eyewall, suffering no damage
  • The same can be said for the Tao Southern Command, where Jim Wicks also escaped damage.
  • Thank you to those who emailed or Facebook'ed us to check in. Your concerns are heart-warming.
  • But many others along the East Coast of America haven't been so lucky. We wish any of our readers who were in the path of Matthew our sincerest hopes that their loss is limited to property.
Unfortunately, this week did see a loss at Tao HQ
  • The Tao Treasurer's mother, my mother-in-law, passed away in the early hours on Thursday.
  • She fought a long battle with cancer. The timing of her passing was unexpected—and rather shocking.
  • She was proud of the work the Tao Treasurer and I did on this Newsletter. She herself was a magazine professional and even married into a notable publishing family. The Tao Treasurer's step-grandfather is Hugo Gernsback... of the Hugo Awards.
  • Every time we publish an issue of this Newsletter, the Tao Treasurer and I feel like, in some small way, we are carrying on that family tradition—which was passed down by her mother to the Tao Treasurer, who worked at the Gernsback Magazines as a teenager.
Aside: One of my favorite stories the Treasurer tells of those days is walking past the office of Hugo. He was imposing figure who didn't much care having children at the office—so she tended to steer wide of him.

But when he wasn't around, she'd sneak into his office, where there was both the most fascinating—and most terrifying—object she had ever seen. It was the death mask of Nicola Tesla.
  • My mother-in-law instilled in the Treasurer a profound work ethic and a love of media.
This has been week of mourning here at Tao HQ
  • For that reason, it's a shortened edition. Your Managing Editor Jim Wicks did an excellent job, again. Next week, all three of us will be back on the path.
  • We'll see you next week.
Happy Grading!

The Craft
  • Developing an Awareness of Color - “color awareness came slowly to me, but now I can’t escape it. Read on, and follow me down the rabbit hole.” So begins an in depth look at all things color. Be sure to also read the link to the The Wagner Color Response Report. Bookmark this article by Art Adams. (provideocoalition.com)
  • Techniques You Can’t Go Without - rhythm, repetition, contrast. “Of course there are more than three painting techniques that will allow you to create a compelling artwork, but learning how to paint a picture well can certainly start with these elements.” Painting techniques that filmmakers, and colorists, should understand. (artistdaily.com)
  • Color Grading Resources - learn the difference between color correction and color grading, understand how to grade correctly with scopes, and take a deep dive into the ACES color space. Put on a pot of coffee. (jonnyelwyn.co.uk)
  • [DaVinci Resolve] Getting Started in Color Grading: Part 2 - “While you could just jump into a random shot and start making adjustments, it’s a sure way to get lost, and getting lost is not a good thing if you want to achieve consistent professional results.” (cinema5d.com)
  • The Science Behind 4K Restorations Of Classics Films - “…you’re never going to see a classic film as it was originally intended to be seen unless you saw it when it came out. However, you are able to see restored digital versions that are much closer to the original prints (and in some ways, much better) than ever before.” - (premiumbeat.com)

  • [video] Grading with Complimentary Colors in Photoshop - “due to the lack of time for searching for the perfect location, for finding better light, or for creating the perfect setup. You might end up with a really good outcome, but you will still feel your photos lack something special in the colors. This is where complementary colors come into play." (fstoppers.com)

  • Color Correction Look Book - This is the second part of the Color Correction Handbook, exploring the creative techniques for over 200 different visual looks. A sort-of recipe book for colorists. (amazon.com
  • The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction - Read how a dozen different colorists grade the same footage with the same gear, differently. A fantastic approach to learning the craft of color grading by Steve Hullfish. (amazon.com)
  • Color Grading with Avid and Symphony - Written for version 6. Fully applicable to version 7. I was a contributor. (amazon.com)
  • Digital Cinematography: Fundamentals, Tools, Techniques and Workflows - Don't let the title fool you.
