From The Publisher
This Newsletter is Wrapping Its Summer Break
  • Next Sunday we begin publishing again, after taking the month of August off (and Labor Day weekend)
This email is a reminder about the IBC Colorist Mixer... This Saturday!
  • Tickets went on sale in the middle of our August break, while I was teaching in Beijing—and I haven't had a chance until today to get this notice out to you, a Tao Colorist Newsletter reader.
  • Your Managing Editor Jim Wicks will be there, representing both the Tao of Color and the recently launched Colorist Society International. Hunt him down and give him a big hug. Jim likes hugs. Tell him I said so.
  • Tickets for the Mixer can be purchased here:
  • The event is being held on Saturday, September 10 from 7p - 11:30p, local time. The location:
Felix Meritis
Keizersgracht 324
89109 Amsterdam
Netherlands

If you're going to attend, be sure to submit your Demo Reel
  • That's right! One of the fun things at the Mixer is watching the best work of your Peers, who are in the room with you, play right before your eyes.
  • Here's how to submit your Reel (the deadline is Tuesday Sept. 6):
  • 3 minutes or less
  • ProRes 422LT or H264.
  • Name and City burned in as a title.

If you're not familiar with the Colorist Mixer—It's about community
  • The Mixer is a joint effort between The Tao Of Color, The International Colorists Academy and Mixing Light to bring together vendors and end-users for a night of social interaction.
  • It's a terrific way to meet the creators of your favorite software and get to know them.
  • It's also an opportunity for vendors to interact with a room filled with their end users.
  • The Mixer is held twice a year, at NAB and at IBC. If you're going to be in or near Amsterdam this weekend and love the art, craft and science of color correcting moving images... then you can't miss this event!
Will you be at IBC? Visit this Newsletter's sponsors!
  • And thank them for their financial support of this Newsletter. They allow us to deliver to you 40+ Sundays a year. Without their support our wives would throw us out of our houses!
  • One of the new products they'll be showing is... well, I'm not allowed to say. Except that it'll be in their DM line of DIT-oriented displays—at a price point that DITs will love. And you'll be able to get hands-on at IBC.
  • Visit Lumaforge at the FCPX Tour @IBC. You can read the full details about this multi-day event here. It'll be one of the only places at IBC where you can see Case Studies, Vendor Showcases and the State of FCP X presentations... all focused on professional content creators.
That's all for now...

Happy Grading!
We'll see you this Sunday.

  • Color Correction Look Book - This is the second part of the Color Correction Handbook, exploring the creative techniques for over 200 different visual looks. A sort-of recipe book for colorists. (amazon.com
  • The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction - Read how a dozen different colorists grade the same footage with the same gear, differently. A fantastic approach to learning the craft of color grading by Steve Hullfish. (amazon.com)
  • Autodesk Smoke Essentials - Walk through grading a short sci-fi film (with downloadable ProRes4444 source material) while learning the ultimate online finishing app...  Autodesk Smoke. (amazon.com)
  • Color Grading with Avid and Symphony - Written for version 6. Fully applicable to version 7. I was a contributor. (amazon.com)
  • Adobe Speedgrade CC: Classroom in a Book - A solid book for a solid grading app. (amazon.com)
  • Digital Cinematography: Fundamentals, Tools, Techniques and Workflows - Don't let the title fool you. I'm only a third way through this book and its explanations of how digital images are recorded, sampled and viewed is essential knowledge for anyone who's craft intersects with digital images. Not light reading. But not filled with math either. I highly recommend this book. (amazon.com)
