             Issue CCLXXXVIII                                                                     A TaoOfColor.com Publication

From The Publisher
  • Long-time readers may remember I ran a series of small group DaVinci Resolve color grading workshops a few years ago under the 'Colorist Flight School LIVE!' rubric.
  • My small group DaVinci Resolve training is back!
  • The first one is just a short few weeks away: August 1 - 3
  • Why now, after the long hiatus?
  • Because I'll be leveraging new infrastructure at Future Media Concepts for teaching live groups in multiple cities, simultaneously.
  • I'll physically be in Orlando teaching this live, hands-on workshop.
  • And my screen and image will be translated to Future Media Concepts classrooms in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Chicago, Irvine CA and Toronto.
  • And yes, students at remote locations will be able to speak to me and I'll be able to see you and each of your computer screens. I'll even be able to take over your screen.
  • Of course, I'm limiting the total number of students to 15. First come, first serve.
  • And if you sign up on or before July 25 you can save 10% on the registration price for the August 1 workshop:
TaoColorist10
  • Now... on to the Newsletter!
  • We'll see you next week.
Happy Grading!!

The Craft
  • Meet the Colorist - “A lot of images are starting to look the same: blue shadows, warm highlights and warm skin tones so it doesn’t look like real photography to me. Personally, I like softer highlights, contrast through mid-tones and creating texture, which we don’t see enough of.” Veteran colorist Beau Leon talks images, inspiration, and passion. (filmlight.ltd.uk/)
  • [video] Color Grading & Manipulating Emotion - this tutorial sparked a lengthy conversation between the Editor and Publisher of this Newsletter during our weekly editorial meeting; should include it here? We both agree that this video starts out strong… but by its conclusion your Publisher's eyes were bleeding imagining trying to sell the final results to a client. In the end, we consider it a passionate argument why it's always best to set your color palette in pre-production; and acknowledge the point of this tutorial... color influences your audience.  (nofilmschool.com)
  • Grading HDR:  - several colorist talk about grading and delivering in this new color space. "“Productions are not necessarily going to bankroll the upgrade to HDR. They want it delivered in the same time frame, and the same budget.” (tvtechnology.com)
  • [podcast] Colorist Podcast Episode 1: Colorist Lynette Dunsing - "She has colored music videos for Nirvana and Metallica and television shows like Star Trek and Law and Order. We talk about where the industry has been and is going, the business of being a colorist, and how coloring is different is other countries." (http://www.coloristpodcast.com)

Plus more new features... detailed at the link. (studiodaily.com)
  • Premeire Pro Update: Kicking The Tires On Proxy Editing - the author talks about how he made "make extensive use of the new Proxy workflow on a music video in a way that I think will make sense for many editors: create proxies and work on a laptop away from the full rez media." (provideocoalition.com

  • Quicktime Player Forces a Switch - 'it’s great that we can finally remove QuickTime from our [PC] systems, and work with codecs like ProRes natively, but what about outside of our applications.  . . . That’s where Telestream Switch comes into play."(provideocoalition.com)
  • Workflow For Panasonic Varicam 35 & LT - "Below is an outline of how to set up both cameras for action, and steps for importing footage into Avid, Final Cut Pro X, and Premiere. I’ll also outline a basic finishing workflow with DaVinci Resolve and 4K V-log content." (abelcine.com)
The Business

  • Why TV Shows Are So Dark - “…one problem with the wave of technological change that has made dark lighting easy and cheap for filmmakers is that it doesn’t translate to all television sets. • Mad Max in Black & White - “The best version of ‘Fury Road’ was what we called a ‘slash dupe’ . . . I asked (colorist) Eric Whipp… ‘can I see some scenes in black and white with quite a bit of contrast?’ They looked great.” Director George Miller on the quixotic route to release a black and white version of his movie on DVD. Good read. (slashfilm.com)
  • Amazon Gets Dolby Vision HDR - “the Dolby Vision workflow is very similar to existing color-grading workflows. The goal is to preserve more of what the camera captured and limit creative trade-offs in the color-grading and mastering process.” Amazon adds to the list of movies and programs you can watch in Dolby’s High Dynamic Range. (provideocoalition.com)

  • Bad Month For Apple Repairs - two major resources are being lost to the Mac-loving community. The big one to me... Tekserve in NYC is closing. I'd be embarrassed to say how much money I spent there during my 15 years as a Mac-based pro in New York. I wonder what they'll do with all those old Macs lining their walls?(9to5mac.com)
  • How To Focus: 5 Research-Backed Secrets To Concentration - "why does it seem to be so much harder to focus than it was in the past? Here’s the reason…" (time.com)
