             Issue CCLXXXVII                                                                     A TaoOfColor.com Publication

Publisher: Pat Inhofer                                                            Managing Editor: Jim Wicks

From The Publisher
  • Happy Independence Day to all our readers in the former British colonies!
  • This Newsletter typically takes these holiday weekends off. But we didn't want to go two consecutive weeks without a Newsletter—especially since we're so close to our August hiatus.
  • We were off last week because your Publisher was walking the Great Wall of China.
(from left to right: Bram Desmet, Patrick Inhofer, Robbie Carman at the Great Wall just outside of Beijing, China)

  • We were in Shenzhen, China earlier in the week teaching at a Chinese color conference.
  • One unique aspect of the conference was a Color Correction Competition.
  • Robbie Carman and myself had arrived just in time to be two of the judges in this, their final competition round.
  • I know, a Color Correction Competition sounds hokey. But having witnessed the event, I was surprised at how closely it mimicked an actual color grading session.
  • They had 60 minutes to grade, shot match and create a Look for an 80 shot sequence... with a room full of eyeballs watching their every move.
  • The winners got the fundamentals right, with strong shot matching skills - which they focused on before getting to the Look.
  • Those competitors who focused on creating impressive Looks didn't have time to get the shot matching right - and their work suffered visibly as a result.
  • There are a few things I'd change about competition—but overall I walked away believing that it wasn't a gimmick; and as our craft gets more and more visibility I expect events like this will start popping up.
(Competitors in the final round of the Colorist Competition. Shenzhen, China.)

  • This week's Newsletter is slightly shortened... as Tao HQ has a weekend full of BBQs and visiting friends and family.
  • We'll be back next week with another full edition of the Tao Colorist Newsletter!

Happy Grading!

  • Overcooking the Grade - “The look of a film should do just this – serve the story. But can it be distracting and/or pretentious?” DP Simon Wyndham on the dangers of overcooking the grade. (redsharknews.com)

  • AMD Radeon RX 400 series naming scheme explained - "AMD differentiates 9 tiers which are gathered into 5 groups. Interestingly Tier 6 (46X cards) might use RX prefix or not. • Moving To The Avid Artist | Dnxio - "Previously, we just used a lot of Blackmagic, like their Thunderbolt IO–their 4K stuff.  So, once an Avid-branded unit came out, we wanted to jump on it to see if it’s faster and better and all that jazz; or was it a case of paying a little bit more money just to have the Avid name on there?" (provideocoalition.com)
  • iPad Pro Review - “Is the iPad Pro better for the video professional when compared with other tablets and iPads? Obviously the bigger screen is nice if you are editing in iMovie, but can one go beyond that?” Editor Oliver Peters takes the iPad Pro out for a spin. (digitalfilms.wordpress.com)
