From The Publisher

This week we're jam-packed with post-NAB 2016 stories and reactions.

So... let's get to it!

We'll see you next week.

Happy Grading!

The Craft
  • Meet the Colorist - “What differentiates you now is how you handle yourself . . . being able to come up with ideas on the spot and using the software really as an extension of your mind.” Boston-based Colorist Rob Bessette offers advice if you're just starting out in color correction. (premiumbeat.com)
  • [video] Color Grading in ACES - colorist Andreas Brueckl has the experience working in ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) to walk you through the workflow and the theory behind it.  (vimeo.com)
  • [video] How Ink Is Made - “I remember making my first ink. It was a frustrating, difficult thing. But in the end there wasn’t a sense of relief, it was more a sense of loss. That I didn’t have to work on that anymore.” A surprisingly beautiful video on the craft of making four color ink. (youtube.com)
  • Red Hot & Feeling Blue: The Psychology Of Color In Film - "Creating a color palette that adds to your films aesthetic is important, but perhaps more important than that is using color as the powerful storytelling tool it inherently is." New readers to this Newsletter will find interesting links to explore—but it's a bit of a rehash. (nofilmschool.com)
  • Color Gamuts and Getting to 'True' Colors - an analysis of a paper that examines the differences between DCI-P3 and other common color gamuts, 'content with "...a larger color gamut is actually worse, potentially creating "distortions" for the viewer since the display cannot show colors that are present in the original content".' This article links to the original paper. (displaydaily.com)

The Tools
  • [video] What’s new in DaVinci Resolve 12.5 - editor Jonny Elwyn runs through the extensive list of new features in the latest public beta release. As usual, it's a 30 minute read... and that's if you don't watch any of the embedded videos. (jonnyelwyn.co.uk)
  • [Forum] Baselight Feature Wishlist - "don't you think it is a good idea to collect [feature requests] here and share it with the development team?" (liftgammagain.com)
  • [video] Resolve 15 Second Tips - colorist Dado Valentic has created a new 15 second series on new and old DaVinci tips. Available on Instagram. Cool. (instagram.com)
  • [video] Resolve 12 Entrenamiento en el Espanyol - for our readers whose first language is Spanish: “Lo que necesitas saber para que tus vídeos salgan perfectos de Davinci Resolve y cómo personalizar tu forma de trabajo con este software.” Hopefully it's good. (norender.com)
  • Why the Fusion + Resolve Connection Is A Big Deal - "for visual effects artists looking for a platform for online grading and effects work, complete with version review and in-the-cut conform capabilities, the Resolve-Fusion partnership is a compelling one." (provideocoalition.com)
  • Resolve 12.5: A Few Of My Favorite Things - "just a quick tour of some of the new stuff I like after playing with 12.5 a bit, including some of how to use them or find them in the interface… a bit of tutorial mixed with a review of features." (provideocoalition.com)
  • Talking To BlackMagic Design About Resolve 12.5 - Scott Simmons "sat down for an audio interview with Bob Caniglia about Resolve 12.5. While asking about performance improvements were at the top of the list I was also curious about where Blackmagic sees Resolve slotting into a rather crowded and diverse NLE market." (provideocoalition.com)
  • [video] Flame Premium: Color Grading 'The Revenant'  - supervising finishing artist for Technicolor breaks down their workflow with Lustre and Flame. Why did the color grade take 8 weeks? Once you see some of these breakdowns you'll know why... they graded it like a commercial. Definitely worth the 30 minutes for great ideas on how to improve your work. A good example of the presentations you'll see if you attend NAB. (youtu.be via Marc Wielage)
  • [video] Frame.io Pre-NAB Demo Video - a really impressive integration. I'd like to see something like this in Resolve. (vimeo.com)
  • Resolve 12.5 Top 5 Creative Features - from a colorist hired by Blackmagic to demo Resolve at their booth during NAB. (robbessette.com)
  • [video] Boris Continuum Complete 10 For OFX - a quick demo video showing some of the filters and capabilities of this extensive plug-in architecture. (vimeo.com)
  • [video] NAB 2016: Avid - learn about the introduction of their latest storage solution, aimed at smaller shops. Plus, what else is new in the realm of HDR, Filmlight and more Media Composer features. (studiodaily.com)
The Business
  • HDR: There’s Still Work to Be Done - “Why, then, were so many people at NAB showing fairly average TFT displays rated at 400 nits and calling them HDR?” The question most asked at NAB2016.  (redsharknews.com)
  • Australian Design Shines with Blackmagic - bmd scoops up one of the most high-profile design awards in the world, becoming the first Australian company to be selected as Red Dot: Design Team of the Year. That puts the company in a peer group with Apple, Bose, BMW, Braun, Porsche, Sony, Adidas and Bosch. (digitalfilms.wordpress.com)
  • Netflix Unveils Its HDR Plans - "To watch Netflix’s HDR content, the consumer must have a 2016 Dolby Vision or HDR-enabled TV set (available from LG and Vizio), with a recommended broadband connection of 25 megabits per second or faster." (etcentric.org)
  • Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player Certification - "The UHD Alliance today expanded the range of products that can bear the ULTRA HD PREMIUM logo with announcement of certification and logo licensing for Ultra HD Blu-ray Players." At least they're not calling it 4K UHD. More details at the link. (displaydaily.com)
  • Data-Mining Litigation & Vizio Smart TVs - there are "class action complaints against the privately held TV maker for allegedly collecting data about their viewing habits without their knowledge and selling it to third parties." Is Vizio the Volkswagen of the Information Highway? (hdguru.com)
  • 5 Reasons Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s 8K Workflow Kicks Butt - this is an info-tisement for a production company. But if you can read past the cutesy writing and sales pitch, there are a few interesting tidbits. (studiodaily.com)
  • Media Giants Push Back Against the FCC - to open set-top boxes to competition. Reading this article, I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. (etcentric.org)
  • Portrait Displays Acquires SpectraCal - congrats to L.A. Heberlein and his entire team. From what I can tell, this will give them access to new markets and new opportunities. (displaydaily.com)
