From The Publisher

Before we get to the great offer Light Illusion is offering the readers of the Tao Colorist Newsletter, a quick story:

It was 2010’ish and I was having a terrific color grading session with a new client. We were beginning to establish a rapport and a shared language; color grading a television show that was recorded in a ‘flat’ picture style, using the newly released Mac version of DaVinci Resolve 8.

The show was edited in FCP 7 and ours was a round-trip workflow. But in one moment the entire tone of our color grading session went from ‘happy and humming’ to ‘sour and plodding’.

What happened? My XML import had a few mistakes. I didn’t check the final timeline frame-by-frame. The shots were all correct, but in a few spots, the edit points drifted.

Suddenly, my client lost confidence in me. And that confidence was never quite recovered.

Color Grading is all about confidence

You need to foster a sense of confidence to your client… and then maintain that confidence throughout your time working with them. Confidence is not just the key to success in color correction but in any business.

In an article about their book, ‘The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance’ the authors make this argument about the connection between Confidence and Success (the book is geared toward women but the research shows it applies equally to men and women):

“Success, it turns out, correlates just as closely with confidence as it does with competence . . . The good news is that with work, confidence can be acquired. Which means that the confidence gap, in turn, can be closed.”

Do you have 100% confidence in your color corrections?

For most of us, the weak link in our Chain Of Confidence is our reference display. From day-to-day or month-to-month are you confident in your display? If a client were to ask you: ‘Is your display accurate?’ Can you answer, without hesitation or doubt, ‘Yes’?

If you hesitate answering ‘yes’ then this email offer is for you.

Display calibration is all about having Confidence in your images, so your clients can have Confidence in you

In the past, The Tao Newsletter has had special offers on calibration packages because anyone selling their color grading services needs to confidently profile their displays. Today, the Newsletter is back with a special offer from Light Illusion!

Light Illusion and The Tao Newsletter have teamed up for a one-week ‘Be Color Confident’ sale

Light Illusion is a leader in display calibration (and LUT generation) software with LightSpace CMS. LightSpace is famous for its precision math, speed and minimalist user interface. LightSpace CMS comes in four flavors, each unlocking additional features and additional hardware that it supports.

I'll first provide a quick overview of the LightSpace CMS software packages and then we’ll look at the special One Week Only pricing

Also, check out this webpage on Light Illusion’s site (and hover your mouse over the checkboxes for more specific details of what each feature supports) for more specifics:
http://www.lightillusion.com/lightspace_options.html

As they say on that page, “The main difference between the [various] versions of LightSpace CMS is hardware integration, and LUT manipulation capabilities.” Also keep in mind that all versions of LightSpace CMS support Resolve, Mistika and Scratch.

LightSpace Software Versions Explained

LightSpace LTE

This is their entry-level software, priced affordably. For long-time readers of the Newsletter, you’ll find this one is right up your alley since it includes direct support of LUTs for Flanders Scientific displays in the FSI LUT format.

Probe support: It’s limited in the models of hardware probes it supports but does support: Many i1 Display probes, the Eizo internal probe and Spyder probes. Visit the link above and scroll down to ‘Probe Integration’ and hover over the gray ‘i’ icon for specific model numbers.

Display Support: The LUTs generated from LightSpace LTE are compatible with FSI, Eizo NEC and Osee.

Tao Newsletter Discount: 30%

LightSpace CAL

LightSpace CAL builds on LTE by adding support for a wider range of LUT boxes and LUT format support. If you need to load your LUTs onto an external piece of hardware (say, Davio, Pluto or AJA) then you’ll want to step up to LightSpace CAL. This also includes LUT format conversion and the ability to preview LUTs on your own image directly within LightSpace.

Tao Newsletter Discount: 40%

Note: While all flavors of LightSpace CMS export LUTs for Blackmagic’s HDLink Pro… NEVER upload a LUT to your HDLink Pro since that box distorts uploaded LUTs  (and have for almost 4 years, at least).

LightSpace Pro

LightSpace Pro builds on LTE by adding support for many additional Probes. It adds a wider range of Trimstimulous probes of tristimulous probes and includes the Spectrophotometers from (but not limited to) Colorimetery Research and Klein—plus Spectroradiometers, at the truly high-end.

The Pro version also allows you to go beyond LUT conversion to actually manipulate your LUTs or filter and smooth noisy LUTs.

Tao Newsletter Discount: 42%

LightSpace XPT

LightSpace XPT is top-of-the-line and fully featured. It’s for those of you requiring ASC CDL and ACES support, plus support for ARRI Look tools. It also adds batch capabilities for LUT Conversions (if you’ve got folders of LUTs that need to be converted into another format).

Tao Newsletter Discount: 45%

Don’t forget about the LightSpace forums, when you need help

Steve Shaw is the leader of LightSpace and he maintains an active forum for LightSpace users to ask questions and get answers. Steve is famous for the directness of his answers, the clarity of his opinions and the quality of his software. You’ll also find him participating in the LiftGammaGain forums.

One-Week ‘Be Color Confident Sale’ Pricing

Light Illusion never offers discounts this big! The Tao Newsletter team is honored to work with Light Illusion to offer you the following 30%-45% discounts on the full range of LightSpace CMS software:

Software            Tao Discount          Discount Price

LightSpace XPT        45%                     £1196.25 GBP   ($1699 US)

LightSpace PRO        42%                     £1087.50 GBP   ($1544 US)

LightSpace CAL        40%                       £765.00 GBP   ($1087 US)

LightSpace LTE        30%                       £367.50 GBP    ( $521 US)

These are HUGE discounts on a premiere software package. But we’re not done yet…

The Tao Newsletter negotiated an additional discount on the entry-level Xrite i1 DisplayPro OEM Probe

If you buy the X-Rite i1 with any LightSpace CMS software package, Light Illusion will knock 20% off the Book Price of the X-Rite i1 DisplayPro OEM:

Hardware                      Tao Discount          Discount Price

i1 DisplayPro OEM Probe         20%                 £181.60 GBP   ($258 US)

(note: all US dollar prices are estimates and will fluctuate depending on the exchange rate and your bank or credit card)

(note 2: All software runs on Windows and works on a Mac via Parallels or VMWare)

(note 3: You’ll need a patch generator to send test patches to your external display. Luckily the free version of DaVinci Resolve integrates with LightSpace for this precise purpose)

We’ve also negotiated an Entry-Level ‘Get Color Confident’ Bundle for Tao Newsletter readers

At the Tao Newsletter, we believe that anyone who wants to sell (with total confidence) color correction as a skill set needs two things:

  • A high-quality external reference display
  • Display profiling software to let you know if the display has drifted out of ’spec’.

Since the entry-level LightSpace LTE allows you to profile your display (to determine if your display had drifted), you can be 100% confident 100% of the time. And just as important, it allows all owners of Flanders Scientific displays to directly upload calibration LUTs in the FSI LUT format.

As long-time readers know, Flanders Scientific has been a sponsor of the Newsletter for years and a great many of you are very happy owners of FSI displays.

If you don’t own an FSI, you can still use the LightSpace LTE LUTs as an Display LUT in your color correction software—until you’ve got some downtime to bring in a calibration specialist.

The special Bundle Pricing adds to the 30% software discount and the 20% hardware discount:

LightSpace LTE + i1 DisplayPro OEM Probe = £525 GBP ($746 US)      (~5% discount over individual purchases)

How do you take advantage of this offer?

Simple. Just email Steve Shaw, the leader of Light Illusion:

steve (at) LightIllusion.com

Tell him you want to take advantage of the Tao Newsletter’s ‘Get Color Confident’ promotion and the software you’re interested in. It’s also the perfect time to ask him any questions you may have.

This offer ends March 16

Technically, this is a seven-day offer. But since we’re sending out this email late Tuesday—we’re extending it to Wed. March 16.

Remember, this pricing just doesn’t happen with Light Illusion. If you’ve ever wanted to buy LightSpace CMS, this is the week to pull the strings and make it happen.

One More Thing…

When you visit LightIllusion.com you’ll notice they’ve got other versions of their software not featured in this email. For instance, LightSpace HTL is designed for Home Theater calibrators. SpaceMatch DCM is used on PCs to bypass ICC profiles and allow computer displays to be precisely calibrated using 1D LUTs.

Then there’s LightSpace LUTs

If you’re interested in using LightSpace just for converting LUTs between LUT file formats—then check out LightSpace LUTs and LightSpace LUTs+. Only the LUT conversion feature of LightSpace are enabled but at a terrific price.

Email Steve for the discount pricing on LightSpace LUTs and LUTs+.

Are you in the market for a Spectrophotometer or LUT Box?

Be sure to email Steve (at) LightIllusion.com and mention the ‘Get Color Confident’ promotion. Steve is extending discounts on hardware as well. The price breaks aren’t quite as dramatic as on the software—but your bank account will appreciate the savings, just the same.

Expect a reminder email, in a week

As publisher of the Tao Newsletter, I take your email address very seriously. We don’t sell your email to anyone. EVER.

That means deals like this only ever come directly through me. As a result, even though sending you incessant emails about this deal actually does generate more sales—it also generates annoyance. And so we err on the side of less annoyance.

I’ll remind you about this deal in the regular Sunday Newsletter this Sunday. And again in week from today, next Tuesday. And maybe, since we’re letting this deal extend into next Wednesday, just a few hours before the deal ends.  And that’ll be all.

Three more reminders, maximum.

Do you research. Ask your questions. Pull the trigger. I have no idea when Steve Shaw and Light Illusion will be offering this kind of discounted pricing again!

Sincerely,

Patrick Inhofer
Publisher, The Tao Colorist Newsletter

Th- Th- That's ALL Folks! See you Sunday!
Happy Grading!
