The Tao Colorist Newsletter

Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor
for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sunday.

             Issue CCLIX                                                                              A TaoOfColor.com Publication

From The Publisher
I thought I'd offer my thoughts on how to read this Newsletter

My advice might seem a bit counter-intuitive, which is this:

You're not supposed to read Every. Single. Article.

When readers unsubscribe, they sometimes offer feedback as to why. A not insubstantial portion of those ex-readers offer some variation of:

"I couldn't keep up with all the content."

Of course not! You're not supposed to! :-)

My goal for you is to find 3 articles to click on, every week

Our readers come from all aspects of this industry, so I try to keep this Newsletter slightly broader than the super-focused niche of color correction... while still sticking to the theme. Which is why there's no way you need to feel like you should be reading *everything*.

Think of this Newsletter as the Sunday New York Times

Except for my beautiful 70-something downstairs couple in Manhattan in the 1990's, no one ever reads the Sunday Times from cover-to-cover.

They won't even read every section every week.

Skim this Newsletter each week, hunting for your three stories

Then go back, read them. If you've got time for more? Awesome. If not, you're keeping yourself educated—or entertained.

The last thing I want is for you to feel overwhelmed.

Read 3 stories and feel good that you're the perfect Tao Newsletter Reader!

[change of subject]

Last week I mentioned I'd be writing an article about creating a Color Correction Demo Reel.

My article on building a Demo Reel to build the career you want is online

It's on MixingLight.com and it's free, in front of the membership wall. I hope you enjoy it!

Until next week...
Happy Grading!

  • [video] Rob Wickings: Telecine Colorist - It's really enjoyable listening to an 'old-school' colorist talk about doing film restoration in 2015. There are more of these on this website and we'll feature one a week until we've caught up. (darkartoflight.co.uk)
  • Color Grading Ash vs Evil Dead - FotoKem’s Alastor Arnold talks workflow and setting the look for director Sam Raimi's comedy/action/horror series on Starz. A few PR-leading questions in here but overall offers some insights. (postperspective.com)
  • [video] Crimson Peak and The Color Of Fear - a great visual exploration of the relationship between Guillermo Del Toro's color pallette and that of the godfather of Italian horror, Mario Bava. Not to be missed. (youtu.be via filmmakeriq.com)
The Tools
  • [video] Shedding Some Light on Daylight - new tutorials from the Baselight folks on their dailies platform called, Daylight. Tutorials cover managing media, syncing audio, and color grading. (filmlight.ltd.uk)

  • [video] Boris Continuum Complete 10 For Avid - a quick overview, including skin smoothing and retouching.. (borisfx.com)
  • [video] Adobe Creative Cloud For Teams - product demo of how to deploy Creative Cloud for a larger company. Personally, the music track annoys me to death.  (video.tv.adobe.com)
  • What is ACES? - a great explanation of what ACES was designed to do and when you should consider using it, "The best final image quality is always generated from the workflow that involves the least number of image transforms, and performs the creative work at the best possible effective bit-depth." (lightillusion.com)

  • [Review] LiveGrade Version 3 - posted in July, "I will have to say I’m not as impressed as I was with version 2.  There are some things that I like about this version and there are definitely things that I do not like about this version and that I will likely never use, ever." The Business
  • Virtual Reality and the TV Engineers - expect the unexpected when SMPTE television engineers pose the question: is VR a new art form? SMPTE does thinks it's important enough to devote the entire first day of its annual conference to it. (studiodaily.com)
  • SMPTE 2015 Examines OTT Delivery, Preservation Issuesott?  Eh. It's the archiving and the details of silent era frame rates that gets this article in this Newsletter. (studiodaily.com)
  • QuantumFilm: New Sensor Technology - "its proprietary nano-coating material that results in sharper images with higher dynamic range and more naturalistic motion" to replace CMOS sensors... or so they hope. Catchy name, if nothing else. I think Q is becoming the new I, if you catch my iDrift. (nofilmschool.com)
  • Concessions and Re-Seating (Not Films) Give Regal Strong Q3 -  yup, they can thank the Tao Staff (and its readers) for all their popcorn support. (celluloidjunkie.com
  • 'Candy Crush' Developer Purchased for $5.9 Billion - with a 'B'. Seriously? That stupid little smart phone game generated $206 million. In 3 months. This past year alone. Down 50% from 2 years ago. Now, I'm a little bad at math but... $5.9 BILLION? How does that add up?

People... we are all in the wrong media business. On the positive side, whoever convinced Activision Blizzard that $5.9B is a fair valuation is worth every $100 million they got paid! I betch'a they're really hung over this morning. (etcentric.org)

Sunday Morning Funnies
  • [video] Brother, Can You Spare Some Creative - what happens when people in other industries are asked to do free spec work? Funny. Except, it’s not. Been there, done that.  (youtube.com)
  • Old Landfill, Bizarre Art - for one week "a wooded, marshy nature preserve built atop an old landfill and brownfield . .  will be an offbeat outdoor museum, replete with sculptures, strange creatures, and a pop-up "church” that slings tasty barbecue." Click through for images from the semi-finalists. (citylab.com)
  • [video] Finding Nemo - Disneyland wasn’t the happiest place on earth - or the driest. A massive fish tank sprung a leak at the T-Rex Cafe. The diners fled, the water flowed. Funny if not for, you know, the fish. (youtube.com)

  • LG Talks 4K OLED & HDR - "HDTVTest caught up with LG UK at its shiny new headquarters at Weybridge to talk all things OLED, and here are five key takeaways." (hdtvtest.co.uk)
  • [Forum] Building An 8K Rig for After Effects - an interesting thread soliciting advice about building a PC, "I'll be . . . developing compositing workflows for stereoscopic 360 panoramas . . . As much as I'm a Mac loyalist, I realized there's no way I'll get the performance I need with a Mac so sizzlecore PC here we come." (forums.creativecow.net)

  • [video] Erasing A CD With 240K Volts - sure, he could buy a re-writable CD but he’s enjoying this waaaay too much. At Tao HQ we think 240,000 volts looks like it will erase just about anything. (youtube.com)
