From the Publisher

I've been getting emails and Tweets asking:

When will Mixing Light and Tao of Color have new DaVinci Resolve training for Version 12?

The good news, we wrapped 13 days of studio time shooting a 'Fundamentals' and 'Advanced' title at the end of September. I just got the first batch of movies from editorial - and am really happy. This was the first time I shot training like this in a proper studio; and I was so busy worrying about my responsibilities that I just trusted everyone else involved is a professional.

And they are.

These movies are working better than I thought and we can't wait to share them with you.

Also in production: Color correction for Premiere Pro CC editors

For Adobe editors looking to 'up' their color correction game. The Premiere Pro version of Colorist Flight School is using a documentary project I promised those members almost a year ago. It has everything, CinemaDNG, ProRes, GoPro, archival footage, web screen captures.

Just like half the projects we all work on every day.

Plus, it's a terrific story with lots of social value.

This color correction documentary project has been delayed for almost a year for reasons I'll be at liberty to describe soon. And once the Premiere Pro version is released, I'll turn my focus to using the same, complex project for Davinci Resolve 12 coaching.

Now, sit back, pour yourself a cup of coffee (or wine, for our readers in later time zones) and enjoy this edition of the Tao Colorist Newsletter.

Happy Grading!

  • [video] How Filmmakers Use Color to Manipulate Our Emotions - color grading is making it into the mainstream consciousness and popular culture website The Verge has posted a video about color and filmmaking. • [video] What Color is the Moon? - hint: the answer ’appears to be’ found at the halfway mark. The answer is not what you think. Entertaining 4 minute video. (youtube.com)
  • Macbeth’s Colour Leads The Narrative - the newest stab at this Shakespearian classic is punctuated by some bold color grading decisions. One of the several interesting tidbits from colorist Adam Glasman: "You'd think having that dominant colour would be easy because you'd just copy it from one shot to the next but it was really sensitive to mismatching. This would really jump out when you'd watch everything as a sequence." (definitionmagazine.com via @stevehullfish)
  • Color Grading The Dressmaker - colorist Trish Cahill talks about her workflow on the Australian film ‘The Dressmaker’. Love the part about making stars using one pixel windows. That takes patience. (if.com.au)

But it does include a few tidbits for those of us interested in grading live action Virtual Reality, "To have the flexibility to work in the native resolution of the stitched image meant no blanking was introduced to the final output, which would affect the way the image wraps around to create the VR 360 degree image." (bosfcpug.org)
  • FAA Misses Deadline for Creating Drone Regulations - our tax dollars (not) at work. But this probably better than the alternative. And let's cut them some slack, they probably had a Las Vegas junket to attend before typing out the new regulations. (filmmakeriq.com)
