The Craft
  • "War Room" Part 1: Acquisition and Editorial - Author, colorist, editor and a really good friend of the Tao, Steve Hullfish, was co-editor of 'War Room' a Labor Day released feature film that was #1 at the Box Office for two weeks. He does an amazing job explaining their pipeline, from picking an NLE, to digital acquisition, syncing, subclipping and more.  (provideocoalition.com)
  • "War Room" Part 2: From Picture Lock to the Final Color Grade - from the extensive 'delivery prep' through to the actual conform process itself, the grade in Nucoda and delivery. Lots of great detail in here that everyone should read. A classic article on the entire color grading process. (provideocoalition.com)
  • Impossible Mission: Becoming an Editor - if you are in need of career inspiration, read Eddie Hamilton’s story. A kid who was turned down by film schools, who took odd jobs to make ends meet. Eddie just finished cutting MI5: Rogue Nation. (provideocoalition.com)
  • What Makes Colorists So Special? - a terrific piece interviewing several colorists about their craft. Black arts, sorcery, magic, twiddling knobs; their words, not ours. “They’re artists helping to make moving images more powerful.” But the final line in the article is the best!  (beakstreetbugle.com via Marc Wielage)
  • How Hollywood Is Helping To Design The Perfect TV - after you read the story (above), dive into this one with feature film colorist Mike Sowa. For counter balance it begins by discussing the color grading process: “Digital colour, basically, is a confusing, paradoxical mess.”  (wired.co.uk)
  • [ebook] The Color Wheel and Beyond - want to see colors like master painters such as Van Gogh, Botticelli, and Whistler saw them? Download this free e-book on color theory, mixing colors, and how to create complementary color schemes (artistdaily.com)
  • Mad Max: Fury Road - Q&A with George Miller - I'll be watching this sometime on Sunday (after the Jets crush the Dolphins in London). Looks very interesting. (youtu.be via  mentorless.com) And Dolphin fans... I can be reached: @patinhofer
  • [video] The Sound of Paint - Lincoln MKX turns into a private & colourful concert hall in Paint graded by colorist Adam Scott at The Mill. Great visuals. (themill.com)

  • Codecs, Codecs, Codecs -  "so how, as a Media Composer editor, do you know where to begin when it comes to choosing and working with a codec.  Well, we’re going to tackle that exact question in this article." Colorists should read this article as well! Most excellent with a PDF you can download and keep near to your heart. (provideocoalition.com)
  • DIT Workflow ‘No Escape’ - "I had a fairly large DIT crew on this shoot . . . This luxury allowed us to have split shifts on set, and to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We essentially created our own near-set post house and lab in a hotel room." Great details in here. (ditspot.net via @stevehullfish)
  • [Update] Magic Bullet Suite 12.1: Resolve, Mercury, Trackpad - why would you want Magic Bullet Looks, Cosmo, Mojo and Film in DaVinci Resolve? The Business
  • ‘Happy Birthday’ Copyright Ruled To Be Invalid - but that doesn't mean it's public domain. Technically, Happy Birthday is now an orphaned work - leaving it open for someone else to claim. But it's great news, anyway! Just wait until Mickey Mouse is up for expiration to watch some real copyright shenanigans in action. (filmmakeriq.com via David E. Bell)
  • Trends and Stats: Digital Cinema PLF Investments -  "Premium large format (PLF) is one of the fastest growing and most active areas of cinema exhibition with significant potential to grow in size over the next ten years." With 4K hitting homes at an accelerated pace via online distribution, this is how cinema will stay a step ahead. (celluloidjunkie.com)
  • Being Professionally Personable On Facebook - "We use Facebook to share our professional news . . . We also use Facebook to share our personal news . . . So how do you keep these worlds separate, without cutting yourself off from either the personal or professional benefits of Facebook? Here’s what I recommend." (hbr.org)
  • When It’s OK to Ignore Feedback - "Feedback from the right people—who are informed, helpful, and have your best interests at heart—is invaluable. But when it comes to everyone else..." you'll have to click through to find out. (hbr.org)
  • Sony Launches All-4K YouTube Channel - "dedicated to collecting examples of 4K and UHD cinematography captured with Sony cameras and behind-the-scenes information about how the cameras work, and techniques and best practices for capturing 4K content." (studiodaily.com)
  • ATSC 3.0 Progresses Toward Approval - "the physical layer of The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 digital TV broadcast platform has achieved candidate standard . . . Work continues on the other parts of the suite of ATSC 3.0 standards, which is expected to number 20. " (hdguru.com)
  • Amazon Brings Prime Instant Video To Android Phones - like the headline says. (etcentric.org via John Sellars)
