The Craft
  • [video] What if Man of Steel was in Color? - the Man of Steel’s color palette didn’t sit well with some fans. So they re-colored it to the gumball colors of the 1978 film. We've got two problems with this internet sensation: 1) They are not 'restoring' anything... they're just wishing out loud. 2) They've exaggerated the blue desaturated look of the original to give their 'restored' version more pop for comedic effect. (youtube.com)
  • Is Hollywood Depressed? - The Tao Treasurer and I went to the movies. By the time the previews were finished we couldn't help but wonder if Hollywood has a case of the blues? This article explains... (taoofcolor.com)
  • [videos] Crazy Colors Contest Winners - if you haven’t checked out Phlearn.com it's a nifty site for all things Photoshop. This is a fun video showing the winners of their Crazy Colors Contest. Over 1,500 entries are boiled down to 14 incredible images chosen as winners. (youtube.com)
  • Grading The Americans - Technicolor PostWorks John Crowley talks about working directly with the show’s DP and researching old photos to come up with the look for the series. (postperspective.com)
  • [Infographic] Games Of Thrones Color Analysis - the color schemes of the various Houses and major characters. (colourlovers.com)
  • [Infographic] Marvel’s Avengers 2: Character Color Palettes - like the title says. (colourlovers.com)

The Tools
  • Breaking the 8K Barrier - Quantel is boasting how Pablo is now the the world’s fastest grading system. How fast? 8K 60p in real time.  (redsharknews.com)
  • Instant Color Correction - Color Fixer Pro is a new free color correction plugin from NewBlueFx. Apparently, it's how the pros color correct. There's even a video proving it. (newbluefx.com)
  • FCP X Grading Strategy - a workflow combining color grading tools with LUTs to create custom looks for FCP X users... but assumes your shots already match reasonably well. (digitalfilms.wordpress.com)
  • DaVinci Resolve: Better Black and White - two workflows for getting to black and white beyond a simple desaturation. For the record: Unlike the author, I wholeheartedly encourage you to turn off the 'preserve luminance' option for some really radical B&W looks. (premiumbeat.com)
The Business
  • [video] What if Blackmagic Disappeared - the internet is full of haters and trolls. One filmmaker has had enough and make a 'What If?' short film.  (youtu.be via @FrankGlencairn)
  • Adobe + Foundry: Should you be terrified? - rumors are flying that Adobe is considering purchasing The Foundry. A Warsaw-based post-production pro offers some terrific thoughts about this potential match-up... while sharing the reactions of the Twitterverse. (creativeimpatience.com)

  • [podcast] The Coloristos: NAB 2015 Wrap-up Part 1 - I did a 6-hour round-trip drive today. This podcast seemed to almost fill up the entire ride :-) And they've got Part 2 coming... (coloristos.podomatic.com)

    • [interactive] Your Life on Earth - wanna know how planet earth has changed since you were born. Just enter your specific details on this interactive site and check it out. Chances are, a lot has happened. (bbc.com)
    • [video] Doomsday Video - CNN produced an actual doomsday video to be broadcast when the world is ending and it’s incredibly dull. HBO’s John Oliver enlisted the help of actor Martin Sheen to producer a happier video to be played during humanity’s final moments. (youtube.com)
    • [video] 500 Years of NYC Skyline - an animated time lapse that recreates the development of New York City’s skyline, from the 1500s to today. Via a somewhat bizarre Willy Wonka elevator. (nytimes.com)

    • [video] iWatch: ‘Will it Blend?’ - Blendtec reduces the Apple Watch to a small pile of toxic dust. Always fun. (pixable.com via @itsnataliek)
    Gear Heads
    • All the Rage - got a Tangent Element rig in your color suite? Want to beef it up and make it look more like the DaVinci Big Control Surface? The Rageboard is your solution, for only 2,900€ or $3,200USD. (angry-face.com)
    • Fun Comparison: Which is the best 4K Monitor for Color Correction? - they call this article 'fun' but then seem to take it super-serious. They give huge weight to sRGB color gamut then (appropriately) declare it moot but then circle back around to it. This article is in here not for the analysis but as a round-up of available, affordable 4K displays and their feature sets. At Tao HQ, we urge you to come to your own conclusions as to what you'll get for your money. But kudos for them for (mostly) correctly expressing the reasons to ignore DCI-P3 color gamut reproduction on any direct view display. (wolfcrow.com)
    • [video] NAB 2015: Canon’s New On Set Workflows, HDR Displays and BT.2020 - this interview answered a few questions for me about the prototype HDR display I saw at the Canon booth... including how much of Rec 2020 color space that 2000 nit display encompassed? (cinetechgeek.com)
    • [video] The New FSI On Set OLED + Carry Case - a good interview with long-time Tao Newsletter sponsor. Discusses the enhanced feature set of their NAB-revealed DM Series OLED. (youtube.com)
    • [video] Interviews: FSI and EIZO - two videos in this article... one with EIZO about their new 4K display and one with FSI about their new entry-level AM series displays, priced similarly to the EIZO. (provideocoalition.com)
    • 24 inch 4K Reference Display From Canon - this item is in here for me to vent: Is it BT.2020 or not? 80% BT.2020 is like 80% Rec. 709... which *wouldn't* be Rec. 709. If it was 95%? I'd call that close enough... but if you download the 'detailed specs'... there's zero information on supported color gamuts—suggesting it's not close to 95% BT.2020 (or they'd put it in there). Grrrr... why do professionals insist on trying to fool their customers? Shame Canon. Shame. (provideocoalition.com)
    • 5K 60hz Shootout: iMac 5K vs. MacPro Tube and Tower - OS X 10.10.3 has added 60Hz support for the Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor at 5120x2880 . . . So here's another OpenGL "shootout" that includes the 2010 Mac Pro tower sporting two top NVIDIA GPUs. (barefeats.com)

    • [video] Litterbug faces - excess litter is a huge problem in Hong Kong. Scientists have been enlisted to take DNA from trash on the ground and use it to generate physical likenesses of the litterers. The litterbug faces are then displayed on the Hong Kong transit system, social media, and print media. This advertisement is the end result. (youtube.com)
    A Step Too Far
    • S**t People Say to Women Directors - there’s a Tumblr making the rounds that we first about from a colorist friend of the Tao, Alexis Van Hurkman. In his post he says it best, “It’s ridiculous, in this day and age what women in our industry are having to put up with.” (vanhurkman.com)
