From the Publisher
  • IT IS HERE!
  • It feels like it's taken months to get this thing to market.
  • Oh. Wait. It HAS taken months.
  • At 14 hours across 135 movies - I guess it's not surprising that it took a bit of effort to produce and deliver.
  • During this initial Launch, we're offering the training at a discount which ends on Tuesday.
  • I extended the Launch discount window when I realized on Thursday I never sent an email to you, Newsletter readers, announcing the Launch.
  • Thursday night was also when I realized that Thursday night was actually Friday night.
  • Yes, Launch Week is always that kind of week.
  • Even if you're not interested in buying the training - we've posted almost 45 minutes of free previews across 7 different training movies. These are full-length lessons, without anything cut out.

[change of subject]

  • This week we're a little lite on Newsletter content.
  • Not for lack of trying. It just wasn't there.
  • And that's how the internet is some weeks.
  • See you next week when Jim and I will be writing the newsletter from the same physical space - as he visits me at my new digs in Orlando, Florida.
Happy Grading!
The Craft
  • [video] Is Color Grading Killing You? - the term ‘fix it in post’ takes on a whole new meaning when it’s YOU that you should be fixing in post. Take some time to watch Editor Zack Arnold walk you through some tips on how to stay healthy while working on your craft. (youtube.com)
  • Warren Eagles: 5 Tips for Colorists - "When I create a look and present it to the director I need to be able to back that up with confidence". Lots of other good advice. (redsharknews.com)
  • Why Our Brains Like Stories - "If the story is able to create that tension then it is likely that attentive viewers/listeners will come to share the emotions of the characters in it, and after it ends, likely to continue mimicking the feelings and behaviors of those characters." Interesting stuff. (blogs.hbr.org)
The Tools
  • The Resolve Standard Candle Benchmark - a standard candle is a known source of luminosity. Colorist Sascha Haber created a Resolve document that you import to see how much GPU performance your system has. Project File Download and Instructions are available. (carousel.hu)
  • GoPro Cineform Codec In Creative Cloud - "It's also difficult to determine just what quality or bit depth was rendered from After Effects or Premiere. Though Premiere has more information on file properties, there's no tag for bit depth, and files rendered from AE or Premiere at Quality 4 are read as Quality 5 in Premiere Pro." The whole article reads that way. Almost humorous. (provideocoalition.com)
  • ProRes444 XQ In Creative Cloud - It isn't. In Creative Cloud, that is. This blog post links to solutions for making XQ work in Creative Cloud. (provideocoalition.com)
  • [pdf] ProRes White Paper: June 2014 - One of Warren Eagles' suggestions in today's newsletter is know your codecs. The previous article on XQ linked to this year's ProRes White Paper. Now's a good time to put that advice into practice. (images.apple.com)
