From the Publisher

  • This is the Tao Colorist Newsletter's 200th Edition!
  • To help us celebrate, please click that Tweet, Plus, Like or In button at the top of this newsletter and let your world know they should sign up too!
  • Apologies for last week where I doubled up The Tools and replicated it under The Business.
  • As we celebrate 4 years of the Tao Colorist Newsletter you'd think I'd have systems in place to keep that from happening.
  • I do! That sort of thing has happened before...
  • ... It's just that my system catches it before I press 'queue'.
  • In my days working at big post-production facility there was a simple term my engineers loved to use more than anything else - and it's appropriate here: Operator Error

Change of subject

  • Remember 5 weeks ago when I said Tao HQ is 10 days from moving to Orlando, FL?
  • We've been 10 days from moving to Orlando... for the past 35 days.
  • The movers have been cancelled twice. There were moments of insanity where my bones were vibrating at a different frequency than the rest of my internal organs. I finally shaved my beard (straight blade, hot lather) to help change our luck!
  • And it's definitive. We're moving on Tuesday.
  • Or rather: Our furniture is.
  • On this side of Mid-summer's Eve we need you to cross your fingers, toes and eyes and nod your head in the direction of Stonehenge.
  • Why? The Tao Treasurer and I find out on Monday if we're following our furniture down South. It's far from assured.
  • And I'm not being dramatic. Seriously, I haven't disconnected our fibre optic internet connection.
  • And for the first time in a very long time, I really REALLY desperately want to cancel my internet service.

See you next week! Happy Grading!

The Craft

  • The Edge of Light - although this blog piece is written for still photographers, there is some good stuff here for Colorists to understand about the Golden Hour, the Blue Hour, and Twilights.  (petapixel.com)
  • Histograms for Dummies - dig into this pithy blog story on the Histogram by one of the teachers of RED's Reducation class. (offhollywoodreporter.com)
  • The look of things to come - as this blog post nicely sums up, 'the look of a production can have as much an effect as music or even the tone of the script.' How color plays an important role in TV productions. (redsharknews.com)
  • [infographic] The 10 Commandments of Color Theory - the focus is on graphic designers. And while not aimed specifically for the film Colorists there are some good reminders. We love #9.  (youthedesigner.com)
