Happy Grading!
The Craft

  • Creating analog magic with digital - the black and white film, 'Nebraska' was shot on an Alexa after film was ruled out. If you want to know why, read on. Very interesting story. (theverge.com)
  • Colorist Glossary: Updated - over 600 terms are now listed. And the pdf download is over 60 pages. The glossary is offered elsewhere but the most up to date version can only be found at Kevin Shaw's site. (finalcolor.com)
  • [video] Behind the Scenes of Light Iron - 'Craft Truck' takes us on a tour of the DI-house Light Iron. Includes an interview with Supervising Colorist Ian Vertovec (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hitchcock, Ender's Game) as he explains what he does for a living. (youtube.com)
  • The cinematographer roundtable - 5 of the most recognizable DPs working today open up about a Cinematographer's life. They talk about the directors who have inspired them, and why the movies they shoot aren't always the movies we see. (hollywoodreporter.com)
  • The RGB Colorspace Atlas - a richly colored book that depicts every color in the RGB gamut. It's the coffee table version of a Color Cube. Literally! (thisiscolossal.com via liftgammagain.com)

The Tools

  • Printer Light Hotkeys in Davinci Resolve 10 - I started using these just this week. Resolve has had 'printer lights' for years (now called Offset Controls) but these hotkeys are new and nifty. Read the blog post to understand the one small layout decision that makes them awkward to work in Resolve. I agree - but I think the contrast controls should be laid out for the left hand (off the number pad) for faster two-handed control. (premiumbeat.com)
  • [video] 101 on Resolve 10 - it's back to basics using Davinci Resolve 10 'Lite.' This lengthy tutorial from Sliced Pictures covers creating your workflow, importing media, working with XML or EDL's, and basic color correction and grading. Runs 41 minutes. (vimeo.com)
  • 20 Color Correction Tutorials in 20 Days - Tao 'sister' membership website MixingLight.com is running a holiday marathon of grading tutorials. From plug-in overviews, to workflow insights to shot breakdowns. This blog post explains what's in store and contains a free video Preview of one mini-series of tutorials we're doing. (mixinglight.com)
  • 8 RAW CinemaDNG Shots from Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera - I'm usually not a fan of grading a single frame from a camera to get a sense of how it 'grades up'. But if you like to do so, here are a few from the new compressed DNG format on the BM Pocket Camera. (eoshd.com)
  • 7 Productivity Boosting Keyboard Shortcuts Every Mac User Should Know - because the computer is part of your toolset. (lifehacker.com)
  • Behr Paint Formulas For Spectrally Flat N5 - posted on FSI's Tech Page. Scroll down to see the base paint to buy (available at Home Depot) for a neutral gray wall behind your reference monitor (and within your field of view). The formula changes depend on the size of the can. (flandersscientific.com via @hurkman)
  • [autodesk] ACES in Flame and Lustre - working with ACES in Autodesk solutions. From a new Vimeo Channel dedicated to Flame, Smoke and Lustre tips. Tips are created by color workflow expert, and Tao friend, Cedric Lejeune. (vimeo.com via Quinn Richardson)
  • [autodesk Lustre] Lin vs Log - how the Lin and Log toolsets influence contrast controls differently. (vimeo.com)
  • [autodesk] Import RED Footage using the ACES Workflow - like the title says. (vimeo.com)

Mackenzie emailed us to say, "we shot at magic hour over 5 days. So we were getting exact same-color results for each scene. We shot on EPIC at 5K 24~96fps. We actually did our grade in After Effects for this one.  But we're usually working in DaVinci these days." Nice work! (vimeo.com via @mackenzieshepp)
