From the Publisher

Tao HQ is back in business after a 2-week vacation. I'd like to express my warmest thanks to Managing Editor Jim Wicks who stepped in to produce last week's newsletter on his own. It's a grueling experience and I can't say enough how much I appreciate his dedication and excellent execution!

Be on the look-out for a special Tao email this week. You may have noticed that SpectraCal has become a Tao Colorist Newsletter sponsor... and they've got a special bundle deal for all of our readers. So keep an eye out for the details!

See you next week!

The Craft

  • [Video] Are you sure you can trust your eyes? -  A short 2 minute video that highlights the Munker-White Illusion. This is something that every Colorist should know by heart. (youtube.com via @graymarshall )
  • [Video] Exposing Photo Manipulation With Inconsistent Shadows - How to tell if a photo has been digitally manipulated. This 17 minute video isn't directly related to the Craft, but it's one of those things that might help you one day make a shot more convincing. That. And it's cool. (YouTube via filmmakeriq.com )
  • [Video] Introduction To Color In Digital Filmmaking - I LOVE this video so much, that I'll be showing it to my college students on Monday - where we meet for the 2nd time this semester. John Hess really manages to drill in the point of where Digital Color Correction REALLY begins. And where is that, you ask? Refresh your cup of coffee, click through and watch this well produced Intro to Color. (filmmakeriq.com)
  • Understanding Low Contrast Filters - "A technique used by some cameras and cinematographers to reduce the appearance of subject contrast and soften highlights. In this article, we examine the mechanism and relative trade-offs behind these filters." A technique used by DPs that colorists should be familiar with. (red.com)

The Tools

  • [video] After Effects: How to get the Michael Bay 'Sky' effect - After Effects CC Trainer Kevin P McAuliffe breaks down how to create the cool lens filter effect that simulates a look Michael Bay uses in almost all of his movies. The Business

  • A Comprehensive List of Videotape Formats - Dating back to 1956. (tech-notes.tv)
  • Hobby or career? - If you are an independent filmmaker - or involved in anyway with independent film - you work long and hard and follow your passion. But many reap minimal financial rewards. This is a good article that tackles the question many have been asking - include the United State tax collection agency, the Internal Revenue Service. (filmmakermagazine.com)
  • Yahoo Screen: We grade it here, and see it there - Yahoo tries to reinvent the art of channel surfing with a mobile video app. The tech company has released Yahoo Screen, an iOS mobile video app that turns your finger into a remote control. (yahoo.tumblr.com)
  • Amazon Studios May Crowdsource Selection of Its Web TV Show Pilots - ( allthingsd.com)
  • Jim Jannard: My Final Post - Jim Jannard is retired from being the public face of RED. He says he's fried and called out the Cinematographer Mailing List, specifically. I rarely read the RED threads on the CML email lists. Emotions always seem to run too high when it comes to RED discussions. Too bad Jim Jarrad couldn't do the same. This newsletter wishes Jim Jannard the same kind of success Grant Petty found after he withdrew from participating in the forums and went to work behind-the-scenes in his company (Blackmagic Design)  - under almost identical circumstances 10 years ago. (reduser.net)

Outside 'The Box'

  • E = MC7 - Editor Oliver Peters is king of the NLE. He has written countless articles about the programs he uses. This is his latest, on why he loves Avid's Media Composer 7. Of course, there's that little bit in there about Trim mode and output cards... (digitalfilms.wordpress.com)
  • [video] No you can't have it, it's mine - Viewing your photos/logic/emotion through an impartial lens. Photographer John Free provides some tips on how to deal with the emotional attachment an artist places on a piece of work. What he says can be applied to filmmakers, generally. (youtube.com)
  • [video] Fire-breathing pixels - fxPhd's Mike Seymour introduces you to the VFx artists at Germany's Pixomondo. For Wired Magazine. ( youtube.com)
