Issue CXXXXIII                                                                       A TaoOfColor.com Publication

Publisher: Patrick Inhofer                                                   Managing Editor: James Wicks

From the Publisher

  • I'm starting my trip to Spain next week. If you want to get together in Madrid or Barcelona, reply to this email. I've got a few people lined up for mini-meetups and we'll see if our schedules sync up.
  • This summer I've been working pretty intensely with SpeedGrade CC. It has a bright future under the Adobe Creative Cloud banner. Be sure to check out the link below to MixingLight's announcement of the training series. Plus some previews of the Lessons.

It's also being hosted on Lynda.com... making your Newsletter Publisher an official Lynda.com author. Neat-o. Special thanks to my Mixing Light compadre Robbie Carman for producing the series - without him it just wouldn't have happened.

See you next week. Happy Grading!

The Craft

  • [Podcast] An Interview with the Colorist for Elysium - Canadian Colorist Andrea Chlebak, based out of Vancouver, breaks down her ACES workflow. She describes her techniques for staying focused while working on the blockbuster and much more . . . (Coloristos.com)
  • Be a Cinematographer - DP Donald Morgan (Girlfriends, 227) explains the tricks of his trade and how capturing images for television comedies has changed since he entered the business. Definitely a craft article. (ebony.com)
  • [Video] The Dissolve - One of the universal narrative tools in post-production is the dissolve. This video pays homage to this - the oldest type of transition between shots (used before cuts were common). This 6 minute video shows plenty of examples of the different ways master filmmakers have used this tool. I just wish they used the dissolve less often when transitioning between movies... in this case, it gets in the way of the narrative and confused me a few times. (thedissolve.com)
  • Filtering Your Look - "The complex interplay of light passing through a physical glass filter cannot be recreated. The actual impact of a physical glass filter depends on many factors such as the lens' aperture, strength of backlight, and whether the point sources in frame are sharply defined." An article for DPs but it speaks strongly enough to this newsletter that it's up here under Craft. (redsharknews.com)

The Tools

  • [Announcing!] Insights Training: SpeedGrade CC - We're proud to announce a new 4-hour training title created by the publisher of this Newsletter, Patrick Inhofer. It's on SpeedGrade CC and available now on Lynda.com. If you prefer to 'own' your training videos (plus the camera-original footage used in the lessons and a bonus presentation), later this week it'll be released on MixingLight.com. Full details at the link! (mixinglight.com)
  • [Video] How To Profile Your Monitor Using CalMan Studio - Freshly minted Tao Newsletter Sponsor SpectraCal just posted their webinar on how to use their high-end monitor calibration software, CalMan Studio. (youtu.be)
  • [Free] DV Rebel Tools for After Effects - Originally available only with the DV Rebel's Guide , the DV Rebel Tools are push button presets and scripts that turns After Effects into a color grading workstation. Note: Squarespace currently requires a credit card even for a $0 shopping cart. (stumaschwitz.com)
  • [Video] Avid Media Composer Meets Digital Anarchy's Beauty Box Plug-in - One of the grand-daddy video retouching tools to automagically smooth out skin imperfections is now available for Media Composer. The link is to an intro tutorial. ( vimeo.com)
  • The Avid-to-Resolve Workflow - This blog article explores round-tripping from Media Composer to Resolve and back. (wolfcrow.com via @Frame)
  • Smoke 2013: Roundtripping to Resolve 9 - The blog is in French, but the video embeds are in English. The information is all good. (fcmtl.com via ilovehue)
  • [iApp] Timecode - For the finishers and editors among us . . . Calculating timecodes accurately is a chore but no longer, thanks to Timecode's peerless combination of precision software engineering and clear, contemporary design. ( itunes.apple.com)

  • Verizon FiOS Introduces 500/1000 Mbps Service - "Verizon's competitors, which don't have the benefit of an all-fiber network, continue to stress consumers simply don't need any speeds faster than what they now offer." <sarcasm> Yeah, right. </sarcasm> Tao HQ is starting to hunt for a new house. Our #1 criteria? Not 3 bedrooms. Not a 2-car garage. It's: FiOS. If we can't get FiOS we're not buying the house. It has the huge advantage of NOT being *shared bandwidth*, unlike so-called high-speed cable modems which are high-speed... until they're not, during peak usage hours. (stopthecap.com)
  • Satellite Fraudband Lets Down UK - "Despite promises of 20Mbps service from satellite operators, customers report actual speeds are well below 1Mbps at the times they actually want to use the Internet." See comments above. (stopthecap.com)

Outside 'The Box'

  • [Video] Title Champ: Saul Bass - The extraordinary work of graphic designer Saul Bass is profiled in this 55 minute documentary. Bass created the groundbreaking title sequences for Hitchcock's films, and in the process, transformed the art of movie titles. (vimeo.com)
