Issue CXXXIIX                                                                        A TaoOfColor.com Publication

Publisher: Patrick Inhofer                                                   Associate Editor: James Wicks

Publisher's Note: Some quick TaoOfColor notes - I'll be in Burbank this week and NYC next week talking Resolve, dailies, and my personal take on color grading RAW and LOG material. If you're in the area and can take off on a Thursday, I hope to see you there!

Tao Meetup in Spain? I'll be traveling in Spain in August. If anyone wants to get together in Madrid or Barcelona for a meal, press reply. Hopefully we can get a small group together. We'll hammer out the details via emails.
The Craft

  • Triad Color Looks - Colorist Aaron Williams walks you through the process of choosing a color scheme based on 3 colors. Click through for all the details. For this demo Aaron uses Colorista Free in FCP 7. (aaronwilliams.tv )

  • Grading Wide Shots - The opening line in this post sums it up nicely: wide shots are tricky. Click through to find out where to concentrate your efforts.

    A great Craft blog post. (blog.iseehue.com )

  • Anatomy Of a 4K Feature - The Director and Colorist in a recorded webinar discuss the challenges of creating a 4K workflow for their film - Path of Souls - graded on Assimilate Scratch. I almost didn't include this since the webinar is highly compressed and the audio got to me after a while. ( vimeo.com via @AssimilateInc)

  • The Case for Calibration -  Even (especially) in the Home Theater - Can uncalibrated displays actually change the way you feel about a movie? This blog post makes the case for calibrating all displays, be it HDTV, front projector, or reference monitor, "Light, contrast and color do more than inform our brains of an image's fidelity, it also helps to affect our mood." Send the link to all your friends and family! (andrew-robinson-online.com )

The Business

  • Color Grading Overload - When is too much of a good thing too much? An interesting question when it comes to color grading. But is anyone really asking? Note: RedShark makes its point with a stylized trailer... which, in my opinion, is its own art form. (redsharknews.com )

Josh, Jason, and Juan discuss the films that inspired them to initially get started in color grading, as well as past and current movies that influence the work they do on their own projects.
