Issue CXXV                                                           Brought to you by: Tao of Color.com

Editor's Note: NAB is a week away. Which might account for the complete drought of Tools articles this week. Or is it because I've been so busy on MixingLight.com I haven't been paying attention to the outside world? Well--what you see is what I got.

Next week I'm at NAB teaching for a day... and then hopefully learning during the rest of my stay. There are a few seminars I'll probably attend and consume some training. Not to mention the show floor.

Speaking of which...

If you're on the show floor and see me with my TaoOfColor shirt and the Tao Treasurer with her MixingLight blazer - stop us in our tracks and say HI! The readers of this Newsletter are the best and we love chatting with you.

No Newsletter next week. See you in two!

The Business

  • Five Companies That Want To Break Up Your Cable Bundle - No surprisingly, they're Telcos or internet-based video companies. (paidcontent.org)
  • Adobe To Cut Off Boxed Sales Of Creative Suite - Gotta say, I'm a big fan of their new model. I'm using more of their products more often than ever before. Instead of upgrading once every two or three years, they're getting monthly payments from me. And I like it. (electronista.com)
  • VOD For Everyone? Self-Distribution With Vimeo On Demand - Explanation of Vimeo's new model. (indiewire.com)
  • Self Distributing Your Film - Lessons From A Real World Case Study (premiumbeat.com)

Edumacate Yer'self

  • Math and Colour Science: For Colourists (ACES) - From a craftsman in the field of color science, Charles Poynton. I dropped my cash on this and will make the time in my otherwise busy schedule. It's three 2-hour webinars this Tues, Wed, Thursday. (Poynton.com)

  • Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire NAB Get Together - At the  KISS Mini Golf (yes!). Brought to you by a good friend of the Tao, Eric Harnden. • Full Day Color Grading Training: *7 Days* Until Show Time - On Sunday April 7 join MixingLight.com co-founders for a full day of color grading training: Colorists Robbie Carman, Dan Moran and myself are hosting a full-day training series on color grading. Buying a Post | Production World One Day Pass for that Sunday will give you access to ALL the classes available that day, including ours (there's no need to individually register for our training sessions).

If you buy before NAB begins it'll save you $70. Pricing details are here.Registration is here. The breakdown for our color grading training is here.
  • Color Graders Unite! Join us for a Colorists@NAB Mixer - TaoOfColor.com, MixingLight.com, the Telecine Internet Group [TIG] and the International Colorist Academy (iColorist.com) are hosting an informal color grading gathering. There's no corporate sponsorship, no free drinks or food, no presentations - but we are inviting the vendors who make the awesome tools we use and there might be some free swag to be had... maybe. Arrange your plans to be there and bend arms with like-minded professionals!

Where: Monte Carlo Hotel, 'Keg and Pub Room'
    When: Sunday, April 7, 8p - 10p
Registration: None, just show up... it's a really big room.
  • Your Free Code for NAB Exhibits-Only Pass: LV5183 - Use this discount code from Tao Newsletter sponsor Flanders Scientific to save $150 and get into the Exhibit Halls for free: LV5183. Expires March 22. This link takes you to the sign-up page for NAB. (NABShow.com)
  • Attend the 12th Annual Las Vegas Supermeet - It's Tuesday night at the Rio Hotel. Go for the presentations, stay for the mega-raffle. I've got my tickets, get yours now. They sell out every year. (Eventbrite.com)
  • NAB Pinball Party - In case the Supermeet isn't your style... a party sponsored by Red Giant Software and MAXON happening at the same general time. (eventbrite.com)
  • Attend the 16th Annual Media Motion Ball - No, no dancing at this event. Nor is it formal attire. But it's a sit-down dinner & dessert with a few presentations and a raffle. It's a much more intimate version of the Supermeet and tends to be a Who's-Who of vendors, authors, bloggers, podcasters, trainers, web forum leaders and the community they serve. Highly recommended. It usually sells out before NAB. Get your tickets now and we'll see each other there: (Eventbrite.com) More details here: (MediaMotionball.com)
  • Discounted Online-Only Las Vegas Monorail Tickets - If you stay at a hotel on the Monorail line, then you'll want to skip the buses and pre-pay for unlimited ride 4- or 7- Day Monorail passes. They're not available in Vegas... save time and money by buying them now through this link for NAB attendees. This page also has the names of the 7 hotels on the Monorail route. Sunday Morning Fun(nies)

  • Get Good At What You Love... - The headline doesn't seem it... but the image is a bit funny. (ducttapemarketing.com)
  • How To Turn Your Handwriting Into A Font - Heh. Not sure if Comic Sans is an upgrade from this idea! (makeuseof.com)
  • [Video] Jack White: Record Store Day 2013 Ambassador - Have you ever wondered why the cable show 'How they make stuff' is always done in Voice Over. Watch this and then you'll know why. (vimeo.com)
  • F.lux Better Lighting...For Your Computer - This way the work of the colorist looks completely different every moment of every day! (stereopsis.com)
  • Sound Engineer's Hard Work - Very cute. (youtube.com via Pastor David Cales)

Weekend Warriors

  • Rec. 2020 Glimpses The Future of TVs - Rec. 2020 is the proposed standard for 4k HD. This article makes a good point that the lines of resolution are the LEAST interesting thing about the new standard. I love the bit depth recommendations. Also: Gotta love how the article starts (emphasis mine):

"The International Telecommunications Union is the regulatory body that establishes the parameters by which all TVs and their related paraphernalia work. Without them, every TV show would look different on every TV."

Oh yeah. ITU - You're Real Men of Genius. (reviews.cnet.com)

  • 27 inch iMac: GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680mx GPU - If you're buying new. (barefeats.com)
  • Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Monitor Review - Thunderbolt in, SDI and HDMI out in a tiny package. (freytag-film.com)

  • How To Write a Convincing E-Mail - Yup, convincing.  (inc.com)
  • The Untold Story of How The Aeron Chair Was Born - I don't care how this article wants to characterize the people who bought this chair... mine saved my wrists - and probably my career. 12 years later and the Aeron I bought in 2001 is still keeping me in the game. (fastcodesign.com)
