Issue CXXVI                                                           Brought to you by: Tao of Color.com

Editor's Note: We're back this week with a 'digest' version of the Tao Colorist Newsletter. I had over 1500 items in my RSS feed to sift over since getting back from Las Vegas... and only 36 hours to do it before needing to push the 'publish' button on this email.

I managed to get through half my feed and pulled what I thought would be the most essential stories from NAB. Next week we'll have a full round-up. And I'm sure NAB 2013 stories will continue to be published for the next month.

I will say:
  • The Colorist get-together a week ago was terrific
  • I loved teaching at the full day color grading training seminar with my Mixing Light co-conspirators
  • The hour I spent with Avid's Bryan Castle and some serious educators getting certified on Avid for Color Correction was a great way to wrap up the week
  • Resolve 10 is a serious update that has all sorts of great tweaks for full-time colorists
  • Baselight's Slate is a fantastic control surface and puts the new Baselight One well within the grasp of mid-sized post facilities
  • SpeedGrade has further to go to truly be integrated into Premiere Pro
  • Flanders Scientific's new 32" color critical LCD display will be in my grading suite--irregardless of them being a sponsor
  • The Tao Treasurer really wants the new BlackMagic Pocket Camera
  • As usual, the best part of NAB is the opportunity to brush shoulders, network, renew old friendships and establish new ones
Next week you'll have a full version of the Tao Colorist Newsletter with much more NAB coverage... and we'll kick off the Annual Subscription Drive! See you then.

The Tools

  • [Podcast] Coloristos: NAB 2013 - From displays to GPUs to dedicated apps this trio of colorists digs deep to offer insights that colorists will find valuable. Well worth your time. (coloristos.podmatic.com)
  • What's New from FilmLight at NAB2013 - A roundup of the Baselight One (~$50,000US), the new Slate control surface (~$12,000US) and updates to Editions (the plug-in). (KPLProd.com)
  • DaVinci Resolve 10: First Impressions - Dan Moran shares his thoughts on this latest release of Resolve, "If I had to sum it up in one sentence it would be: They Listened!" Click through to read the rest. (MixingLight.com)
  • [Video] DaVinci Resolve 10 in 20 Minutes - Essentially the same demo I was given by Boston-based colorist Rob Bessette. This video starts playing after the French introduction. (YouTube.com)
  • [Video] Premiere Pro & SpeedGrade - This was the feature / workflow being pushed Big Time at the Adobe Theater during NAB. (ReTooled.net)
  • [Video] SpeedGrade: Shot Matcher - Another new feature that was given significant stage time during the booth demos. (tv.adobe.com)
  • [Video] What's New in Adobe SpeedGrade - SpeedGrade creator Patrick Palmer walks you through the newest features in this grading app. (success.adobe.com)
  • [Video] Slice X for FCPx - A very cool FCPx plug-in that merges Imagineer's Mocha tracker with CoreMelt's masking tools. Essentially, with this plug-in FCPx now has an integrated masking tool with tracker... without ever having to leave the app. There isn't a colorist reading this that doesn't get how powerful this plug-in could be. I can't wait to get my hands on it! (Vimeo.com)
  • [Video] Digital Anarchy's Beauty Box - Starting at 5 minutes into this video, Scott Simmons talks to Jim Tierney about Beauty Box. Not mentioned here, this plug-in has an OpenFX version that should also work in DaVinci Resolve 10... for colorists looking for options. (Vimeo.com)

The Business

  • NAB2013 Distilled - Oliver Peters offers his synthesis of what he saw on the show floor. I enjoy his perspective of the Avid vs Premiere vs FCPx horse race in his conclusion - which I agree with. Sidenote: I saw Adobe and the Tangent Element everywhere. FCPx? No one was showing or talking about it unless you asked. (DigitalFilms.Wordpress.com)
  • Blackmagic Design and Autodesk Announce Technology Partnership - Resolve colorists who see Smoke as the logical NLE complement to their toolset should be very very happy about this news. (cinescopophilia.com)
  • RED's Jim Jannard on 4K - He surveys the industry move toward 4K and RED's positioning in the market. (cinescopophilia.com)

Edumacate Yer'self

  • 'Creative Looks' Video Training - Alexis Van Hurkman releases his newest title for Ripple Training, focused on creating Looks. (vanhurkman.com)
