Editor's Note: I'm always annoyed how hard it is to find Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech - in full - on television the day we celebrate his birthday. Of course, this is the YouTube age and we don't have to rely on ad-driven television news anymore. Take some time to watch it. Just be sure wrap some quiet around your shoulders for pondering his words. (youtube.com via Tao Treasurer)

The Craft

  • Are tablets up to the tasks of accurate color testing? Notice the color gamut of iPad-mini and how far the Blue Primaries are off from the SRGB standard (which are the same primaries for the HD / Rec 709 standard). Definitely not up the specs of the iPad. This is a follow-up to a post about color blindness (also worth reading) which deals with the infamous (in color grading circles) X-Rite Color Challenge. (dot-color.com)
  • [iApp] Be a Film Color Timer: Dale Grahn Color App - "Dale Grahn himself will teach you his techniques and you will be able to practice them by trying to recreated the famous looks of Private Ryan, Gladiator or Minority Report. You will have 21 invaluable video lessons and 3 levels of difficulties, based on your experience." The real gem of this app are the included video tutorials by Dale Grahn. All your corrections are limited by the controls of a film timer... no User Shapes or HSL selections here. It's all Printer Points and Density. Terrific. (kplprod.com via Tom Parish)
  • Exposing ARGO - A very nice profile from ARRI's website on the three different looks of ARGO and the choices made by D.P. Rodrigo Prieto. (ARRI.com)

The Tools

  • Scratch FX Film garbage clips - A great collection of film 'effects' from colorist Warren Eagles. 125 ProRes clips captured over 20 years broken into Fog, Burn, Grain and Sash (video defects) packages. (icolorist.com)
  • After Effects and the state of GPU computing - A lament about AE's lack of GPU processing support in the context of GPU-based image processing going mainstream. (redsharknews.com)
  • DaVinci Resolve 9.1 Is Now Available - Hightlights: Improved support for mixed frame rates, NTSC DV playback, support for RED Mysterium Monochrome-X sensor (forum.blackmagicdesign.com)
  • Q&A with Les Miserables' Compositing Supervisor Greg Spencer - The director wanted a sky so dramatic that it became a character in its own right. This is a short article. (themill.com)
  • [Video] Smoke: Sky Replacement Techniques - This post includes source R3D files so you can follow along. (joelosis.com)
  • Avid Storage Calculator - An online calculator for film-originated projects. (avid.com via @dickij10)
  • DaVinci Resolve Provides Color Correction for 'Dead Man's Lake' - Normally I don't run with these stories but I graded this film. And it's not a total fluff piece. I guess there are benefits of being the Editor-in-Chief, huh? (provideocoalition.com)
  • Offline to Online with 4K - A multi-app workflow starting with R3D 4k images, edit in Avid, grade in Resolve and finish in . . . why spoil the surprise? Click through to find out. (digitalfilms.wordpress.com)

The Business

  • Edit suite floor plans - Oliver has been busy this month, with a comprehensive look at various way of designing an editing bay. (digitalfilms.wordpress.com)
  • Douglas Trumbull on High Frame Rate Filmmaking, Part 1 - What do 3D and HFR have in common? Attempting an immersive experience. DP Trumbull explains why 48fps fails but 60fps could succeed - and the type of screens he wants to see rolled out. (moviescopemag.com via filmmakeriq.com)
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Masterclass in Why HFR fails - Personally, I think Vincent takes his argument a step too far... with a sample size of exactly one tentpole film. I want nothing more than to see other filmmakers try to make this work. If we're going to stick with decisions made 100 years ago, let's not do so out of raw inertia. (blog.vincentlaforet.com)
  • Scientific and Technical Oscars announced - Awesome to see Mocha and Imagineering Systems getting an Oscar! (fxguide.com)
  • The truth about CES: Why the critics are right and wrong - Not much new has come out of CES the past few years. Is it still relevant? (news.cnet.com)
  • [Video] How to Copyright your Video Content and Protect Ownership - The embedded video is an interesting discussion that separates Copyright ownership from Copyright Registration and the benefits of Registration (under United States law). (reelseo.com)

  • [Video] Soundworks Collection: Composer Michael Giacchino - What's the most important thing for a composer to do if they want to score a film? Learn filmmaking. Great interview. (vimeo.com via @JimWicks)
