Homer Nods

Last week I linked to a blog post about Apple's App Store only allowing three downloads and then it bills you again. My initial reaction was: Wha - ?

A reader emailed, calling me foolish (and snarky and an FCPx hater) for not reading the comments - which completely negate the sum and substance of that post.

In other words - the story is wrong.

At this point I'd normally thank the reader by name for alerting us to this... but why reward his poor social skills?

The Craft

  • [Video] The Art of Creating Awe - Academy Award winning Special Effects Supervisor Rob Legato gives an awe-some presentation to TED. Anyone who works in post-production will feel an affinity to what Rob shares. Terrific presentation. Must watch. (ted.com via @agibrahim)
  • [Video] The Restoration of Classic Films - A few weeks ago I visited Florida-based colorist Jim Wicks and saw the work he was doing on the color restoration of nearly 250 classic Mexican films. They've just released a Behind the Scenes of the restoration process, with a generous selection of remarkable Before / After images of some seriously degraded 35mm prints. The meat of the video starts at around 3:40. They used DaVinci Revival and Resolve on this project. (JimWicks.com)
  • The Loved Ones: A Color Grading Breakdown and Footage Download - This blog post is terrific for two reasons: 1) It's a great breakdown of the color grading process for a TV Commercial and 2) at the bottom of the post (for the cost of your email address) you can download the ProRes source files and DaVinci Resolve project. The folks at the The Film Bakery should be thanked far and wide. BTW - I love the client tip about communicating in 'points'. (TheFilmBakery.com)
  • On Being Photographed - A great story about one photographer agreeing to be photographed by another photographer... and the fruits of collaboration. (Strobist.blogspot.com)
  • How 'Gene Therapy' May Cure Color Blindness - The past two Newsletters have talked about the genetic disposition women have toward superior color perception. On the flip side, a forum post on the TIG linked to a possible cure for color blindness - even for adults. Interesting read. (news.bbc.co.uk via Richard Kirk)

The Tools

  • [Video] 1987 DaVinci Color Grading Demo - Laying claim to the term 'color finesse', this was state of the art 25 years ago. It accepted 2 component and 1 composite inputs while simultaneously outputting the same. And you'd never have to worry about losing your sessions with its 20MB floppy disc backup. Apparently it came with an integrated Smoke system as well (I LOVE that)! (Vimeo.com via @robsbessette
  • How To Color Grade Using the new DSC Labs OneShot - Art Adams develops the chip chart he always wanted. And I have to say it looks pretty good. It has chips for neutrals, skin tones, and the Rec 709 primary and secondary colors. He also offers a lot of great tips on how to balance an image using that chart. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • [Video] 2012 Amsterdam SuperMeet Videos: Now Online - I haven't watched these yet (that's what Sunday Mornings are for) but there are presentations from BlackMagic (Cinema Camera / Resolve 9), Autodesk (Smoke), Red Giant Software, Adobe (Premiere Pro / Adobe Anywhere), and Avid / Baselight. Forget a cup, I'm going to need a thermos of coffee to watch all these!  (provideocoalition)
  • A Colorist's Perspective: Practical Comparisons of DaVinci Resolve and Apple Color - A good post on the advantages of Resolve over Color. Not covered in this article: The one thing Color still has over Resolve... it can deal with freeze frames and still images - which alone is keeping some Color'ists from becoming Resolve converts. (NoFilmSchool.com)
  • Two and half hours of free Smoke 2013 Tutorials - Two resources for free Smoke 2013 training. (JonnyElwyen.co.uk)
  • [Video] Editorial Proxies: How to Export to Lightweight Codecs in a Dailies Workflow - Using DaVinci Resolve 9's new Deliver page. Good overview of how to use this completely re-worked feature. (YouTube.com)
  • FilmConvert: Film Stock Emulation Software - I haven't seen this in action. Looks interesting. There are video tutorials on their website. (FilmConvert.com via @JimWicks)
  • PHYX Color: Color Processing Toolkit - Plug-ins for AE, FCP & Motion to achieve commonly requested color effects. (PhyxWare.com via @IAmColorist)
  • [Review] Magic Bullet Denoiser II - Red Giant Software re-coded this denoiser from scratch after losing the licensing rights when the licensor was acquired last year. Here's a review of the new product with the same name. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • [Video] Phantom Camera On-Set Workflow (Using Assimilate Scratch) - I can't remember if I posted this in an earlier newsletter (and I'm too tired to check)... so here it is. Again. Maybe. (Vimeo.com)
  • Now Shipping: AJA T-Tap for Thunderbolt Workflows - Thunderbolt in. SDI and HDMI out. $295. Shipping. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • After Effects: Why You Should Work in Linear Color Space - And it looks like their website has gotten a makeover. I gotta check what they're doing... (FilmmakerIQ.com)

The Business

  • High Frame Rates: The Future of Film - A write-up of a panel discussion at SIGGRAPH last month discussing high frame rates and its impact on visual storytelling. The panel included industry heavyweights Jon Landau, Doug Trumbull and Darin Grant. Interesting read. (VFXG.org via @DonatoCasale)
  • Build a Better Business Plan: Gambling vs Entrepreneurship - How to turn your indie film from being a big gamble and into a reasonable attempt at making a return for your investors. (LilithFilm.tumblr.com)
  • Impressions of IBC 2012: M&A, Cloud, Multi-Platform, 4K, Efficient Operations, CiaB, and the "Return of Grass Valley" - Blog post rounding up non-color grading developments at this year's IBC. (devoncroft.com)

  • Slowly and steadily, Vimeo hits its growth stride - An interesting article about the growth of Vimeo. (gigaom)
  • How Hollywood Accounting Can Make a $450 Million Movie 'Unprofitable' - A terrific article explaining how the 1983 film 'Return of the Jedi' still hasn't become profitable... through a very simple accounting trick. Of course, this ensures anyone getting 'points' on the film never sees a dime. In Hollywood, it's more profitable to lose money than make it. (TheAtlantic.com)
  • Disappointing 3DTV sales makes 4K the Next Big Thing - And why that push is doomed to fail as well. (philiphodgetts.com)
  • Hey Hollywood, forget SOPA, ACTA, TPP, and look to Neflix - Philip digests an article showing how Hollywood and Washington, DC are trying to defeat video piracy in all the wrong ways. And how they only need to look to Netflix for the model of their success. (philiphodgetts)
  • Why You've Always Got Options - "Think of it. Someone wrongs you, and instead of hiring lawyers and "suing their ass", you take an "enemy" and make them a friend and collaborator. More of this, please." (b.aking.ca)

Outside 'The Box'

  • The Loved Ones: Audio Breakdown and Project Files - Yup, not only has The Film Bakery shared with us their color grading process and project files for this TV Commercial... they've done the same with the sound mix. Using Logic Pro they walk you through their mix... and provide the media and project files for you to try your hand at. (TheFilmBakery.com)
  • The Economics of Stolen Bicycles - Yes, we're going very far outside 'the box' here. But as a former city bicyclist - I find this a fascinating topic. (blog.priceonomics.com)
  • This, That & Scene Files - The good team at AbleCine has released new Scene Files for the FS700. Jem Schofield lets you know how immensely useful these can be in multi-camera shoots. Plus some hints on using silver reflectors. (theC47.com)
  • ZenCoder: Live Transcoding for Live Streams - They're talking 'Multi-screen adaptive bitrate transcoding'. They're looking for 'engaged beta testers'. (go.brightcove.com)

Sunday Morning Fun(nies)

  • Shuttle Endeavor - A great montage of slow-mo footage as the Shuttle Endeavor makes its way to its final resting place. Not funny. A little sad. But fun to watch. (vimeo.com)
  • The 'Amazing' iOS 6 Maps - These images from the iOS 6 Maps App are either really funny or really really sad. If you're on the Google Maps team, its probably the former. But for the rest of us??? The link is to a map that makes the problem pretty clear. (theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com)
  • The Colorful and Outworldly Landscapes of Utah - Yes. And yes. (ColourLovers.com)
  • GoPro Stolen by a Seagull - While filming a San Francisco sunset. It's the stuff YouTube was made for. (YouTube.com via @JimWicks)
  • Gallagher in Slow Motion - Really? Do I need to say anything else to convince you to watch this? Fine. If you need to hear it: Funny (Vimeo.com)

  • What HDTV Model Numbers Mean - Spoiler: It depends on the manufacturer. (reviews.cnet.com)

Gear Heads

  • Why I Love to Edit with My Wacom Tablet - I could easily say the same thing about color grading with the Wacom. (JonnyElwyen.co.uk)
  • DaVinci Resolve: Which GPU Provides the Best Acceleration on the MacPro? - Resolve users asked, Bare Feats answered. This test is only for single GPU configurations - which is the only supported config using DaVinci Resolve Lite. (BareFeats.com)
  • USB 3.0 RAID Solution for Macs - Got a laptop with USB 3 support? How does that compare to using a Thunderbolt RAID? Get your answers here. (BareFeats.com)

The New Kids on the Block

  • [Video] How the 5D mkIII Compares to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera - Friend of the Tao, Marco Solario, is one of the lucky few to get his Blackmagic Cinema Camera. He's put the BMCC up next to the Canon 5D mkIII and tested how the cameras compare.

He does a good job of it, though I would have used Resolve to do the BMCC Debayering - since this is the signal path that footage is optimized (or so I'd think). No matter. Still very interesting and worth your time to watch. (finalcutmtl)
