The Craft

  • RED Scarlet & Resolve: Black & White - One way of getting to Black and White. (presynkt.com)
  • Reverse Key Lighting - A great examination of a trick out of the DP's toolkit, 'short lighting'. Or putting the Key Light to the side or behind the subject. (EvanERichards.com)

The Tools

  • Tangent 'Element' Panels Now Shipping - The pricing still isn't showing up on BH Photo's website but I'm told the full set is priced at around $3500US. Resolve isn't supported - which isn't surprising since the DaVinci team is writing all the control panel drivers for Resolve themselves. My guess? We'll see it. Eventually. Click through for the list of supported apps. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • [Video] Nucoda Film Master: Avid Workflow - A quick demo of the VERY slick Avid / Film Master integration. Including integration with Avid Interplay. Did I say this is slick? I'm impressed. (YouTube.com)
  • Nattress.com: Levels & Curves Filter Pack - For Industrial Revolution. I've been a huge fan of the Nattress plug-ins. His Advanced Plug-ins forApple Color were a staple in my workflow. I'm glad to see he's starting to make these available through FxFactory. (Nattress.com)
  • Digital Film Tools: 'Film Stocks' Plug-in - Simulate 288 different film stocks and photographic processes. Includes vignette controls, user defined presets, 16bit rendering, multi-processor aware. Runs on Adobe, Avid, and Apple (except FCPx), Mac and PC. (DigitalFilmTools.com via @BAVUG)
  • Magic Bullet Looks on Avid Media Composer 6 - One traditional drawback to Avid is the lack of 3rd party plug-ins, especially compared to FCPLegacy or After Effects. This article is a much closer look at the MB Looks plug-in inside Media Composer. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • SilverStack SET - All-in-one data management tools for file based on-set DIT duties. (Pomfort.com)
  • Review: DaVinci Resolve 8 - Oliver Peters offers his usually even-handed review of Resolve 8. Including some good guidance on hardware configurations. (DigitalFilms.wordpress.com)
  • Review: Avid Media Composer 6 - And in this Oliver Peters review, he tackles Avid MC 6. Another great write-up. (DV.com)
  • Hiero: Collaborative Desktop VFX Workflow App - It's in open beta. (theFoundry.co.uk)
  • Virtual XDCam - Need to deliver properly formatted XDCam files to a broadcast network? Here's how to do it using Avid on a PC. Nice. (DylanReeve.com)
  • S-Log and the Sony F3: Part 3 - Interesting tests of shooting in Log on the F3. I also recommend watching Part 2 of this series which demonstrates where 'middle-gray' should read in S-Log. Mini-Rant: I really wish pros would stop calling LUT-applied footage as 'graded'. It's not anymore graded than the footage coming out of a Handycam you'd buy at your local electronics store. The LUT merely normalizes the footage, there's no intention behind it. (blog.ablecine.com)
  • Adobe Post Workflow on 'Mobius' - It's been a while since I've done any serious work on After Effects. At about 10 minutes into this breakdown is a feature I hadn't seen - the Rotobrush. Nifty. (blog.vincentlaforet.com)
