Issue LXXXI                                                           Brought to you by: Tao of Color.com

Editor's Note: Your trusty Tao Colorist Newsletter Editor is a bit overwhelmed with work. Hence, this is a very abbreviated version of the Newsletter. But WAIT - don't move on, I've got something for you to do . . .

. . . if you're going to be at NAB this year (or looking for a reason to go) scroll down to the Edumacate Yer'self section of this Newsletter.

I invite you to join me and two other (fabulously handsome) colorists for a full day of training at NAB's Post-Production World on Monday, April 16. Full details below. I'll see you there!  (In truth, only one of us are fabulously handsome. Which one? That depends on whom you ask ;-)

The Craft

  • Flat Doesn't Really Mean Flat - Word up. Alexis Van Hurkman (one of the potentially fabulously handsome colorists doing the full day color grading training at NAB) makes a pithy point about 'shooting flat'. It's a point you'd think would be obvious... but, sadly, isn't. (VanHurkman.com via David Bell)
  • [Forums] Why We Sometimes See Different Colors - Ours can be such a tough profession because there is rarely an objective 'truth' when discussing images and colors. Last month colorist Richard Kirk uploaded to the TIG a great text document explaining why two perfectly calibrated monitors of different types can look completely different. This link is a direct download to the .txt document. (TKColorist Internet Group)
  • Practical Advice on Color Grading With A Mid-Range Monitor - Tao sponsor Flanders Scientific posted a FAQ on their website answering how a customer should grade on the FSI mid-range panel if perceptually it has a warm push when compared side-by-side to their 10bit (FRC) reference panel? Just like the previous item... the answer has to do with the human neural net. In this case, it's amazing ability to auto-white balance. The full answer is a necessary and interesting read. (FlandersScientific.com)

The Tools

  • FSI's NAB B-Stock Specials - It's that time of year again. FSI has a bunch of new panels that'll be demo'ed at NAB. But they can't rightly be sold as new, so FSI drops the price and sells them as B-Stock... or lightly used. Depending on the model you can save as much as $800! After NAB they'll take it back to their shop, clean it up, make sure it's aligned and working properly and ship it to it's new owner. This sale started on Monday and after 4 days they pre-sold over half their B-Stock inventory. If you're ready to buy now - then don't wait. These panels are moving fast. (ShopFSI.com
  • [Forums] Sony PVM OLED 24p Flicker Fixed - But the fix introduces a bit of smearing. But the user gets to decide: Smearing? Or flicker? Also - it's a factory fix, so you've got to send the monitor in. The rest of the thread is a decent read. Initial posting by friend of the Tao, Terence Curren on the Avid-L2. (Movies.Groups.Yahoo.com)
  • [Review] Testing 7toX Conversion Utility - With the latest update of FCPx, Apple also announced a 3rd party utility that converts FCP 7 projects into FCPx projects [sarcasm] (that announcement presumably highlights Apple's commitment to it's legacy user base) [/sarcasm]. Scott Simmons decided to take this app through it's paces and see if 7toX really actually works. (ProVideoCoalition.com)

Edumacate Yer'self

  • NAB Full Day Color Grading Training - Three entrepreneurial professional colorists who enjoy giving away their trade secrets (for a price) will tag team for a full day of color grading training at NAB.

Colorist, author and trainer Robbie Carmen graciously invited myself and Alexis Van Hurkman to spend a day with all of you talking about the craft of color grading. We wrap the day with a Q & A session we're calling "Stump the Colorist". The link takes you to the full day grid showing how we've mapped out the day.  (expo.NABshow.com)

Let me know if you'll be there and want to get together (just reply to this email). Maybe we'll arrange a Tao Tweetup?
  • THX Video Calibration Training - I like highlighting this training because... it's THX. And they've branded themselves so well I can't help but mention it. But they're adding new training dates left and right - so here's the link for you to bookmark while I give their announcements a rest for a few weeks. (THX.com)
