Issue LXVII                                                            Brought to you by: Tao of Color.com

Editor's Note: This week was rather light on color grading stories. But I did find a bunch of educational links. So I built this edition around that and sprinkled in some other news. We're shorter this week. But it's Sunday. I suspect you won't mind.

If You Have the Time...

  • Send A Shout-Out About This Newsletter! This Newsletter is approaching 1,000 subscribers and I'd like to hit that number sooner rather than later - with your help...

Since the Newsletter is a bit shorter this week why not take a few moments of that extra time and send a shout-out to peers, colleagues, employees, students, aspiring filmmakers, established filmmakers, your favorite colorist (or their assistants) using Twitter, Facebook, Email, a quick Blog story, Google+ or whatever other form of social media that floats your boat?

Send them to this link and I'll take it from there: http://taoof.co/orNewsletter   THANKS!

And for those of you who already do this on a weekly basis... Double THANKS. You guys (and gals) rock hard!

Tools We Use

  • Lessons Learned From My FCPx to Resolve Roundtrip - While testing the FCPx to Resolve roundtrip, Scott Simmons finds some flaws with FCPx (and Premeire Pro) when using the same source footage with Avid Media Composer via Avid Media Access. He also discovers that Resolve doesn't pass through the audio mix back to FCPx and shares his FCPx workaround to getting the mix from the 'locked picture' back into the graded timeline. Good stuff. (ProVideoCoalition.com)

Tools We Might Use

  • Project X to 7 - Philip Hodgetts has released his FCP X to FCP 7 project migration tool. Nifty if your client starts in X and decides to bail and finish in 7. (IntelligentAssistance.com)
  • First Look: Plasma Lighting - Abel Cine has an interview with Hive Lighting about their forthcoming Plasma lights. Twice as efficient as HMI, flicker free. Just like lighting with the sun (without the nuclear reaction). Watch to the end to see the tiny size of the lighting element. Ridiculous how much light it throws off. (blog.abelcine.com)

Tools We Used to Use

  • After 123 Years, Motion Picture Film Cameras Go Out Of Production - A nice summary from NoFilmSchool on a much longer article covering the end of film camera production. (NoFilmSchool.com)

  • [Video] Fonts Are Fun! - Continuing my font kick... a terrific video designed to educate you about selecting and using fonts. It really is fun. And kudos to Veer for using education as a promotional tool. (YouTube.com)
  • Watch Webinar, Win Copy of Scratch Lab - This live FREE Webinar is about 'DI for File-Based Productions' (let's ignore for a moment if it isn't going out to film it's not 'Intermediate'). Sunday Morning Fun(nies)

  • [Video] Quantum Leviation - This is just freaking... freaky. And awesome. And so Jetsons! The second video explains some of the physics of it. (Kottke.org)
  • [Video] $58k Red Epic Camera on a Remote Control Helicopter (Geek.com)
  • This Is NOT A Cheesesteak - A terrific new Tumbleblog dedicated to highlighting one of America's most pervasive culinary lies... the Philly Cheesesteak. Almost every restaurant, deli, bodega and fast-food joint on the North American Continent willfully misrepresents this most heart-stopping of purely American cuisines. And this blog is dedicated to exposing the lies one greasy faux sandwich at a time. (ThisIsNotACheesesteak.tumblr.com)

  • A Sprinkle of Salt Could Allow Hard Drives to Reach 20 TB - I wonder if sprinkling the salt is an End-User mod. (HardMac.com)

Saving Me the Trouble

  • Final Cut Pro X News - A big shout-out to NotesOnVideo for their nice round-up of FCPx articles and blog posts. Now I don't feel guilty about not covering this stuff (or guilty for cluttering up a Color Grading newsletter with FCPx news). (NotesOnVideo.blogspot.com)

Pirate THIS!

  • UltraViolet Reviewers Hate Hollywood's Digital Locker - But if you talk to the Studio's, the reviewers are just cranky and can't see the Big Picture of just how awesome this technology is . . . for Hollywood. (Gigom.com)
