The Craft

  • "Courageous": The Online - This is the second article by editor Steve Hullfish describing the conform process of a feature film he helped edit. Graded and onlined on a Quantel system, shot and finished with RED files. Some discussion of problems mixing 5D MkII footage with the main RED cameras. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • The Colour of Emotion - Written for the fashion photography crowd. Works for us, too. (SundayCircle.com)
  • [Forum Thread] Reference Monitor Sanity Check - What happens when you finally splurge for a reference-quality LCD and find it looks very different from what you're seeing on your other 'semi' calibrated LCDs and Plasmas? What should you be expecting and how can you get these displays to match? (CreatvieCow.net)

The Tools

  • Magic Bullet Looks + FCPx: What the Heck Is Taking So Long - A great little video explaining why MB Looks hasn't been released yet. (Spoiler: It's a bug that Apple needs to fix) This video also puts to rest the notion that custom interfaces won't be allowed with FCPx (unless you're a total cynic and think this bug isn't so much a bug - but a feature to prevent this type of plug-in). (RedGiantSoftware.com
  • Sony PVM Series OLED Flicker Issue: More Details - Following up on his recent post on this issue Ben Cain of Negative Spaces with comments on the higher priced BVM-E and -F Series displays. (NegativeSpaces.com)
  • Sony's OLED Product Matrix - A graphic de-combobulating the various features of Sony's growing line of BVM-E, BVM-F, and PVM Series of OLED displays. There's also a link for a converter that helps deal with the 24p display issues on the PVM series. (blog.abelcine.com)
  • DaVinci Resolve 8.1 Packs A Punch - In case you've missed the details of this most recent release. (magazine.creativecow.net)
  • [Video] GoPro Cineform Studio Pro - What I find interesting about this video is the suggestion of using this new version of Cineform Studio Pro as a transcode station in place of 5DtoRGB. (Vimeo.com via @ChipBrowne)
  • [Webinar] Color Correction and Grading in Adobe Production Premium - Hosted by colorist, trainer, author Robbie Carman. The link takes you to the master page listing Adobe On-Demand seminars (use the right-hand filter to select 'CS Production Premium'). It's (mostly) free requiring you to sign in (or sign up) with an Adobe ID. (Adobe.com)
  • [Video] After Effects: Change Color vs Change to Color - Explains the difference between these two After Effects plug-ins. (MotionWorks.com.au via @AdobeAE)
  • [Forum Thread] PCI Expander Boxes - Various peeps weighing in on the pros and cons of their favorite PCI Chassis Expander Boxes. (RedUser.net)
  • Five Reasons for 5k Resolution - Covers the main arguments pretty succinctly but glosses over the complications. (5kInsights.com)
  • Sorenson Squeeze 8 - A new version of Squeeze has just been released. CUDA accelerated. More adaptive bitrates. Includes a less expensive Lite version. (StreamingMedia.com)

Includes a panel where Mark Shubin claims 4k distribution will eat up only 5% more bandwidth than 1080p. This is a pretty detailed writeup and clues us in to where the 'big boys' plan on taking us. Good read, but dense. (HDTVMagazing.com)
  • [Video] Interview with Kino Flo Founder - Interviewed by Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut. And it shows. The lighting is great. (FilmmakerIQ.com)
  • Canon Goes Hollywood - Invests in a product research, support, and training center in Hollywood, following similar moves by Panasonic and Sony. (BroadcastEngineering.com)
  • Apple's Planned Obsolesce Schedule - Based on what we've seen with the development of Mac OS X, is it possible to generalize how long you can expect your latest Mac to be supported by new versions of the OS? (TidBits.com)
