The Craft

  • Just When You Think You're Being Original - Colored vignettes: They've been used for centuries in some of the greatest art. Here's an idea on how desktop colorists can adapt these earlier implementations. (VanHurkman.com)
  • The Art of Grading Harry Potter - Mike Seymore (fxphd) and Peter Doyle, who's now graded his 6th Harry Potter film, have an amazingly deep discussion of the Harry Potter color management workflow and how they used it to achieve the aesthetics they were after.

I didn't put a stopwatch to it but the discussion on controlling blacks and the roll-off into mid-grays was probably 10 minutes long. And bless Peter Doyle for only having ever graded one film that wasn't... film. What an awesomely privileged career. (fxGuide.com)
  • Grading Michael Jackson - ICA's Warren Eagles takes us on the Way-Back Machine and shares how he graded Michael Jackson's 'Bad' tour in 1988: 'Fly grading' 35mm and 16mm film on a Rank MK111 telecine recording out to 1". (iColorist.com)
  • Using Color to Convey Emotion in Assimilate Scratch - Free on-demand webinar. (AssimilateInc.com)
  • Understanding Color Correction in FCPx - Oliver Peters has another great post. This time he explores FCPx's color grading workflow... if it has one. He also answers the question if he'll grade a feature in FCPx as he has in FCP Legacy. (DigitalFilms.wordpress.org)

The Tools

  • FSI Launches (2) New Affordable Professional LCD Panels - Tao Colorist Newsletter and Website Sponsor Flanders Scientific has launched (2) new 1080p native LCD panels with standard 3G / HD-SDI / DVI inputs.

These new 21-inch and 23-inch models are priced at $2,495 and $2,995. If you've been looking for an alternative to the aging Dreamcolor LCDs (and avoiding having to buy a box to properly feed the Dreamcolor the signal it needs to produce proper colors) then you'll want to take a look at these (pre-order before August 24 to save $500 - $600).

This link is to Walter Biscardi's write-up. If you decide to buy a Flander's monitor - let them know that 'The Tao' sent you! (BiscardiCreative.com)
  • Element: A New Colorist Control Surface - Looking to fill the space between the Tangent Wave and their much higher-priced CP-200 series control surfaces, Tangent Devices will unveil new interlocking panels next month priced in the $5,000US range. Alexis Van Hurkman visited their headquarters last month and got to spin some rings and push some buttons. He shares his visit with us. (VanHurkman.com)
  • Check If You Need Glasses At Your Computer - Who do you see, Monroe or Einstein? You might want to throw that JPEG up on your reference monitor too! Although I know a graphic designer who always squints at his work, to get a better sense of flow and overall color.... (LifeHacker.com)
