Newsletter Issue XXXVII Tao Of Color.com
The Tao Colorist

The latest news, reviews, thoughts, and humor for professional (and aspiring) moving image Colorists and Finishers.

Personal Note:

Due to a family tragedy earlier this week, this newsletter will have an erratic publishing schedule for the next 2 - 3 weeks.

Editor's Note

NAB2011 was quite an event for 'desktop colorists' - notable announcements included: Scratch for Mac (an assistant station), Baselight for FCP (both the current version of FCP and FCPx), Resolve Free (a feature reduced version of Resolve). Red Giant got into the action with Colorista Free and LUT Buddy (also free) and Divergent Media announced ScopeBox 3 (breathing new life into your door-stopping G5 Mac.)

Those announcements are the tip of the iceberg. There are too many stories to fit into one newsletter - you can expect NAB-related stories and videos over the next few issues.

This is also an exciting time for TaoOfColor.com. I will soon be announcing a range of new training options: from completely software-agnostic (and free) training to targeted software-specific training tools to 'community-based' training ... all aimed at apprenticing the next generation of colorists (allowing us to 'skill up' and stand out from the sea of newcomers entering the craft). Stay tuned for more announcements.

The Rainbow Coalition

  • Looking Back at NAB 2011 - Author & Colorist Alexis van Hurkman looks back at NAB and shares his thoughts on Pablo, Resolve, Quantel, Filmlight, Divergent Media, Assimilate, Christie, Light Illusion, RED and Cache-A. (VanHurkman.com)
  • DaVinci Resolve 8 - XML Roundtrips, Multi-layered timelines, transfer modes, Curves-based Corrections... OH MY! (StudioDaily.com)
  • Assimilate Scratch's 'Digital Lab' on a Mac - The march to Mac continues. But at Assimilate it's not directed at the indy colorist / conformer. The pricing mostly relegates this to post houses. That said - it does support the Tangent Wave and Avid Artist Color control surfaces (adding a mere 8% to the total cost of the purchase). (ProVideoCoalition.com)

Seeing Is Believing

  • ScopeBox 3: Turn that old G5 into an outboard scope. Includes new Gamut display, peak alerts, and more. (ProVideoCoalition via @editblog)
  • DaVinci Resolve 8 - Scott Simmons pulled out his iPhone and recorded this short demo of a multilayered XML import from FCP. (provideocoalition.com via @editblog)
  • Baselight's new controls surface buttons... in action (and I mean... Action!). It's at the bottom of the page. (YouTube.com via @editblog)
  • Inside Baselight's Tent - Scott Simmons captures a demo on his iPhone. (YouTube.com)

Give Your Eyes A Rest

  • 2011 NAB Show BUZZ - Larry Jordan has collected his NAB interviews on this one page. Visit it and you're sure to find the people involved in your favorite software, hardware, books and blogs talking about their latest and greatest. (NABShowBuzz.com

Under A Rock (or Just Booked on a Job)?

  • Welcome to the new FCP-X - To-the-point round-up of announced features. (fcp.co)
  • Full Resolution Screen Shots of FCP-X - Of particular interest to Tao Colorists is Koo's discussion of the new Color Board (which seems to be Color's (and now DaVinci 8's) Hue Curves all 'sexed up'). I'm not sure I agree with his assessment that the 3-Way CC is an example of 'lock-in' (read the color section of his post for an explanation) but it's interesting to read how a casual colorist feels about the current implementation of grading in FCP. (NoFilmSchool.com)
  • Got Time? Watch the Supermeet Final Cut Pro-X Presentation - This is a well recorded 'pirate' video of the FCPx 'technology preview'. If you want to know what everyone else knows... then you need to watch this. But what's up with the only 32,000 views? That's less than 1% of the paid base... (YouTube.com)

Discount Shelf

  • Genarts April Promotions - Save 50% on Monsters GT (genarts.com)
  • Magic Bullet Colorista Free 1.0 - That would be a 100% discount. It's a stripped down version of Colorista II, but it does export Color Decision Lists. (RedGiantSoftware.com)
  • FREE: LUT Buddy - Awww... he sounds cute. And he lets you share LUTs between compliant software. Did I mention... free? (RedGiantSoftware.com)
