Resolve 7.1 introduces major new features for Mac users

Some big news was dropped on anyone keeping an eye or invested in the DaVinci Resolve for Mac.
  • Previously, multiple GPU support was limited to Resolve for Linux. This limited the additional real-time support that Mac users could achieve. With 7.1, Resolve for Mac is now qualified for multiple GPUs via the Cubix GPU-Xpander. The currently shipping Xpander features 4 single width slots. A new version to be released in January will feature 4 double width slots. Interestingly, not only does the Cubix Xpander support GPU cards, but also Decklink and Red Rocket cards.
  • Resolve for Mac now supports the ethernet protocol based JL Cooper Eclipse colorist control surface (the Tangent Wave and DaVinci panels are USB). This is good news for long-time Apple Color colorists - since the JL Cooper surfaces were the only game in town for several years, a fair number of likely Resolve converts probably have this JL Cooper gear and didn't relish buying a new surface. This is also probably good news for MC Color users, since that surface also works via ethernet protocols - though through their EuCon protocol.
  • New Stereoscopic tools including auto left-right matching.
  • The 7.1 release (Mac & Linux) also includes support for new codecs (including OpenEXR), native ProRes support (doesn't require install of Final Cut Studio), more framerates, more robust support of RED metadata, and additional menu pages for the Tangent Wave.
Overall, this is a pretty robust update for Mac Resolve users and allows a nice roadmap from a simple software-only configuration to a speedy multi-GPU workstation supporting Stereoscopic workflows, a choice of control surfaces, and freeing up slots for external storage.

Have a terrific holiday season.

I'll see you all in 2011!
