Mea Maxima Culpa
- My apologies for missing last week's Sunday Morning Reading. A last-minute deadline on an 'easy' gig had me operating on 9 hours of sleep across 72 hours of work, through the weekend. This week we're (mostly) rested, back and better than ever!
Auction Block
- Tangent CP-200BK & CP-200TS, NEW - Looks like a good price to me, at under $9k for these premium panels. Or is this what these panels are currently selling for? If you know, reply to this email and educate me. I only want to post good deals. Source: EBay
- Euphonix MC Color, Used: With several days left on this auction I'm not sure it'll go for a 'deal'. Currently bidding at sub $850. Careful, though. I believe this auction was re-listed after it didn't hit the Reserve price. Source: Ebay
Control Surfaces
- When is your control surface's reset button not your daddy's reset button? When it's a DaVinci Resolve. Alexis van Hurkman takes us through the basics of how these resets differ from most grading apps. (An article covering a similar theme is the "Control Your Color Wheels" post up on Tao Of Color) Source: VanHurkman.com
- Smoke now supports the Euphonix MC Color. The support is *extensive*. Here are a bunch of video tutorials from Autodesk's The Area. In 4 parts! Like all things Autodesk... they did this right (if somewhat overwhelming). Source: area.autodesk.com
Follow Up
- A few issues ago I linked to "The Wilderness Downtown", a nifty integration of Google Street View inside a music video, creating a totally custom experience for each viewer. Here's a blog post getting into the nitty-gritty (and I mean, nitty) (and gritty) on the making of that video. Source: MrDoob.com via philiphodgetts.com
Tools We Use
- How much faster is Apple's Color at rendering in a 2010 MacPro 8-core vs 2010 iMac 4-core vs 2008 MacPro 8-core? BareFeats has done a shootout. The results are interesting. Source: barefeats.com
- The new version of Redcine-X is an impressive update. 3D support, 64bit, FCP XML (very beta)... and. . . wait for it . . . wait . . . Undo ! Source: RedUser.net via @fcpworld
- The Foundry has released a free public beta of Storm. "Redcine-X on Steroids". Multi-track timelines, FCP XML output, and much more. Source: thefoundry.co.uk
Edumacate Yerself
- The creator of Colorista II has a series of video tutorials on re-lighting shots in post using CII in After Effects. The techniques work in other apps as well. Source: prepshootpost.blogspot.com

Sunday Morning Fun(nies)
- I'm with Chris, this is a well-done ad. It suffers from the problem of most web-based videos... too long. 30 seconds shorter would have been better. Source: Chrisfenwick.squarespace.com
- iPad Tangent Control Surface for Apple Color. Seriously. They've recently announced they're going to release it (but I can't find that link).Source: YouTube.com via @MikeFlir

From the Blog
If you're going to invest cash in a control surface, you've got to know if the gear is a good fit for you. This is my list of questions to ask yourself.
There's been a lot of talk on the Intertubes about color grading apps, no doubt much of it inspired by the DaVinci Resolve 7.0 release. With a newly affordable app on the market, there's much chatter about the tools we use. Much of the chatter presents our options as false choices. It's time to knock down some of those Straw Men
TaoOfColor.com Video Tutorial:
This is the first tutorial I've created for TaoOfColor.com. It's not strictly about color grading - but since many graders also handle prepping and finishing duties, I thought this was a good tip to launch with.
It also allowed me some quality time with my screen capture software to figure out my workflow for the more ambitious control surface training I'm recording. The above link will take you to Vimeo.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!! |
