This Week In "Resolve"
Resolve is finally in 'public-ish' Beta... meaning some people who are under NDA and have a beta copy of Resolve 7 are being given permission to chat about it.
StudioDaily picks up a Twitter conversation from Alexis Van Hurkman (author of the Apple Color user manual and an upcoming 500+ page color grading book). But they missed the really pertinent news... no color wheels in Resolve 7, just sliders; meaning a control surface will be necessary for full functionality. Luckily a Tangent Wave fits the bill nicely (hopefully JL Cooper and Euphonix support won't be far behind... and no, I've heard nothing in my grapevine on IF or WHEN such a thing might happen).

Shooting RED for Documentaries
Is it pain or is it pleasure? I guess that depends on how your brain is hardwired...

Two good articles on RED from Oliver Peters.

"Blackmagic Design is pleased to announce our support for RED Rocket in both our Mac and Linux systems. Stereo r3d playback with dual Rockets is also supported on the Linux system. In each case installation is plug and play.
If you do not have Rockets installed, r3d clips are decoded and debayered as per user configurable settings on a project or clip basis.
These new features and more including stereoscopic grading and monitoring in the V7.0 release which is now in beta."

Geeks Only
Looking to spend $15k on a bleeding edge projector? Well, it looks like these LED projectors aren't quite ready. But I'm sure it'll impress friends and clients just fine.

Weekend Project
Need a RAID and don't want to buy a prepackaged machine from G-Tech or CalDigit? How about rolling your own with the SoHoTank ST8? Properly configured it'll reach and maintain 550 - 700 MB/s range. Fully populated at 16TB with a mini-SAS card, it'll run under $4k US. Great review.

The Next Step Is A Doozy
I use an online service WhenIsGood.net for scheduling meetings. They've now introduced an online booking calendar, YouCanBook.me. I have mixed feelings about this one but it's worth the share...

Watch My 'Katrina, 5 Years Later' Documentary
Well, it took a small team to make this doc happen. We distilled 70+ hours of documentary footage into a 42 minute special for BET. I handled the entire 8-weeks-stuffed-into-6-weeks post workflow... including logging, editing, arguing, color grading, finishing. It airs tonight on BET @ 10pm. Search your DVR for re-airings over the next 3 weeks.

UPDATE: MC Color trainingThis is the blog post where I explain when the training will be coming out - and why it isn't here yet..
TaoOfColor.com Video Tutorial:
This is the first tutorial I've created for TaoOfColor.com. It's not strictly about color grading - but since many graders also handle prepping and finishing duties, I thought this was a good tip to launch with.
It also allowed me some quality time with my screen capture software to figure out my workflow for the more ambitious control surface training I'm recording. The above link will take you to Vimeo. It will be posted on TaoOfColor.com in the next day or so.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!! |
