(video) From Cullen Kelly's 'Color Code' podcast.
"One of the scopes that can be shown is a CIE chart. That gives a sense of the chromaticity range but really doesn’t tell the whole story as it doesn’t take into account the luminance of the signal.

Dr Masaoka explained that you can use the idea of gamut rings in the same way but with the advantage that it would include an element of luminance. He is developing plug-ins, the first for Resolve, to allow live gamut ring display and told me that he believes that in the future, colorists and graders would like to use the system as it presents so much information in a simple form."
Fascinating: "While ML is attracting a lot of attention for what it can do for VFX, there is also a new area of VFX focused on producing training data for ML solutions. Houdini, Nuke, and many other VFX tools are being creatively used to generate training data, and this trend is only expected to grow."
"The upcoming AI Creative Summit, which takes place September 14-15, is a virtual event that will feature practical demonstrations as well as discussions with post pros who are using AI in some way to help their workflows." Click through to learn more.
"To save money, streaming services are axing finished shows without bothering to air them and deleting classics. What next?"

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your toolchest with new techniques and approaches.
"Why add this when Resolve already offers hue/sat curves, masking, and the color warper? The short answer is quality and speed."
(video) These look interesting, "These tools are designed to simplify balancing tasks and provide multiple ways to analyze images, making the grading process easier and more precise."
(video) Colorist Darren Mostyn, "Here are 10 of my favourite quick hacks and tips to improve your productivity. #9 is getting the most reaction!"
(video) "In this short and simple tutorial, we see how to quickly update keyframes after editing a Fusion clip from the Edit page. "
(video) "With the latest build of Play Pro Studio 9.6 comes a significant performance boost when transcoding ProRes RAW to lossy compressed CinemaDNG.

We’ll also show the fastest way to transcode ProRes RAW to CinemaDNG with Play Pro Studio, and most importantly a few CinemaDNG metadata hacks for DaVinci Resolve, to offer more debayering options."
"So much is happening so fast in Generative AI development, that I obviously can’t keep up with everything, but I will do my best to give you the latest updates on the most impressive AI Tools & techniques I’ve had a chance to take a good look at."
"With a lot of new features, 2023.8 is one of the best Avid releases in years, but users are also talking a lot about some new version download restrictions."
Now a Hedge product: "With the bin you're working in locked, no-one else can get in to your edit. When you're done, the bins are unlocked, so others can add to or modify your work. Sounds simple, but not if you want to use third-party storage for your Avid. Mimiq changes all of that."
"This little extension will allow you to easily change clips names in your bin and then rename files on disk to match. Yep, just like Final Cut Pro Classic was able to do."
"With powerful rule-making and automated tasks, Hazel makes chaotic desktops and documents folders a thing of the past for Mac users."

From reader Marc Wielage : "Netflix has come up with some tech specs on how clients should use iPads for reviewing color-corrected masters. They go into a lot of detail as to how and why this can work, and I was very impressed at the amount of work they put into this."
"Foremost among the digital offerings is the ThinkVision 27 3D, a 27-inch glasses-free 2D/3D compatible monitor with real-time eye-tracking. Designed for developers and professional content creators like graphic artists or product designers who can benefit from immersive 3D visualization."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff catching my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya gotta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
(video) It's been a while since I shared a Baungartner, "When the image is disrupted by tears, old varnish and grime, that illusion, the magic is compromised. Enter the conservator who, with care and precision will apply selected materials all in hopes of salvaging the painting, the magic and turning a lost situation about face."
Interesting and possibly fun: "YouTube now lets you sort your home page by color, so only videos predominately featuring the chosen hue will appear. The company doesn’t offer you a color wheel to choose from, either. Instead, we get three colors: red, green, and blue."
Who knew that of all the colors in which laptop computers can be made, BLACK would prove to be the most difficult… (via Marc Wielage)
