This was also my conclusion after watching A2 in HDR: "Less cinematic – more immersive. That’s Avatar 2. A whole new different movie experience. And it’s gorgeous."

But it did take a while for my brain to adjust to the crispness of the imagery. Without a doubt, it's the best-looking 3D I've ever seen - with zero fatigue. A more complex story would have been nice - but in my mind, the film is a huge technical achievement.

A super interesting read: "Among the famous characters coming into the public domain, we have Popeye, Buck Rogers and the Hardy Boys this year, the original Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse next year, and King Kong, Flash Gordon and Donald the Duck by the end of the decade. Given the value of pre-existing IP in Hollywood, many people will jump on the idea of trying to develop projects with these newly available icons.

But you can't just pencil in a knife on the familiar Disney version of Pooh and call it a day. There are restrictions on what can be done."

(podcast) "Can marketing help teach audiences “how” to watch a movie? Why might studios get excited about something as simple as a reply ratio to a free screening before even a single frame of film has unspooled? And how can you measure … movie love?"

Colorist Josh Petok has just released a Baselight Training Series over on Lowepost. This article is an introduction to Baselight. Although, the price of owning a Baselight system is sidestepped, which may shock some readers.

(video) "Not being happy with the native tools like “Color Warper” and “Hue vs Hue”, I developed a tool to shift and manipulate colors in a broad way. I was very inspired by FilmLight’s Baselight “Hue Shift” tool, where you have the option of first shifting hues into neighborly colors and then, in a second step, adding more saturation, changing the brightness or desaturating a specific hue value." Scroll to the bottom of the page for the embedded demo.

(video) If you're new to Resolve, then you'll find this useful.

(video) "Mark Spencer shows you how apply Resolve 18's Depth Map effect for isolating objects for color corrections."

(videos) If you already own a Stream Deck XL and don't want to add the Plus device, SideshowFX has a profile pack similar to their Plus profile pack, using Midi controls for more advanced functionality. Scroll down to the Installation and Navigation video embeds to help understand what they're doing here. It's pretty nifty.

I'm looking forward to trying this out when the Mac version ships (hopefully at the end of next month). It looks like they're using Midi commands to provide precise mouse movements for opening Color Page palettes and emulating mouse interactions - without you having to program the precise X/Y coordinates for your display size.

(video) Casey Faris tackles this topic.

Ridiculous: "It looks like Adobe has been harvesting the art you create on all Adobe Creative Cloud apps to add to data sets being used for machine learning. The program was apparently started almost six months ago and all subscribers of Adobe CC were automatically opted in, with nothing in the way of details offered to users."

"MASV currently only supports Amazon S3 to send cloud files, however, more options will be coming soon. Anyone who has experience with S3 knows how difficult it can be to share files directly from a bucket ... With MASV, you can send a file from S3 just as you would a file on your machine."

Brilliant tip in here that I'll be using this week: "Free up storage space in Gmail without losing your important emails."

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

"The two companies announced the launch of “the world’s first premium smart TV chips with Calman Ready functionality” providing built-in pre-configured Calman Ready functionality, and greatly simplifying the availability and use of Calman AutoCal calibration."

"So if the Mac Pro isn’t the fastest Mac you can buy now and the new model won’t be significantly faster when it launches later this year, why does it even exist?"

This article is worth signing up for a free account: "The fact that QDs are able to achieve better coverage of Rec2020 is due to their continuously tunable, narrow emission spectrum that can be customized to meet specifications required when optimizing for different color spaces. OLEDs on the other hand are fixed in their emission spectrum with discrete options for tunability."

"Finding the right external SSD to travel with is tough for video professionals. Here's a thorough breakdown of what you need to consider."

"VDE’s certification validates the benefits of Eye Comfort mode on users’ circadian rhythm by measuring circadian stimulus at different illuminance levels and assessing the impact on melatonin suppression."

How exactly are they measuring the viewer's 'melatonin suppression' beyond syncing to the local sunrise-sunset schedule? Like the term Ai, pure marketing.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

(video) In my mind, calling this 'holographic' is a stretch. And I'm not sure how it'll scale? But it's fun to look at. Watch the embed for the demo.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
